1 In Brief Widen Highway 401 The Ministry of Transportation has announced the awarding of a major contract for widening 9.3 kilometres of Highway 401 east of Newcastle. The $14.5 million contract contract includes widening Highway 401 from four to six lanes and construction of a median barrier. The work will begin about two kilometres cast of Mill St., in Newcastle. "Highway 401 is southern southern Ontario's key east- west freeway corridor," noted Transportation Minister Tony Clement. "In addition to creating jobs in the transportation sector, this project will support business, manufacturing, manufacturing, residential and tourist growth in the Clarington area. The Laskcshore East allday allday bus service bclwccn Bowmanville and Oshawa will be exlcndcd to include Newcastle. The buses will continue to serve Bowmanvillc, Courticc, downtown Oshawa (stops at Bond and Centre or King and Centre), and will travel along Stevenson Rd. and Bloor St., stopping in front of the Oshawa Centre on the way to the Oshawa train station. With this improved route, passengers will no longer need to transfer to Oshawa Transit, but will instead have a direct GO connection to the Oshawa train slation. Outside of rush-hour, the Newcastle buses will also connect at Pickering station, providing convenient access to the GO Train seven days a week.
