Page 4 The Clarington/Couriicc Indcpendem, Bowmanville, Saturday, September 5, 1998 MacDonald-Cadieux Just Misses Top Three Finish "How many times do we have to finish fourth and fifth before we get on the podium," a frustrated yet happy Terry MacDonald-Cadieux stated stated after the Motorola Cup race at Watching Glen, New York, this past weekend. weekend. TMC Motorsports qualified the GM Goodwrench Service Plus/Snap-on Tools Pontiac sixth on the grid, after being third fastest in morning practice. Terry started the two hour and 45 minute race with co-driver Marty Miller finishing. MacDonald-Cadieux didn't didn't get much track time this weekend prior to the race. Their short practice times were cut even shorter shorter because some cars had spun off the track. By the' time the race was to start, she had only driven around the Glen four laps. "I was pretty nervous starting the race. Marty qualified great and put us on the third row. The only comforting thought was that I was surrounded surrounded by good professional professional drivers," added Terry. With only one warm up lap, the largest starting grid this year took the green flag. Thirty-nine cars, 27 of which were grand sports, roared down the wide track. Only one glitch with the start, a front runner missed a shift and everyone had to make hard turns to get around his slow car. MacDonald- Cadieux took her time letting letting every one get sorted out but then found herself back in ninth place. She did not stay there too long, before you knew it, she was up into fifth position. An early caution moved her to fourth where she stayed for the first hour. She was running quite comfortable in fourth, with the first place car only five car lengths away and no one really challenging challenging her from behind. Minutes prior to the one- hour mark another caution occurred. Ed O'Brien, the crew chief, decided to pit and change drivers. That way it would be done under yellow and who knows when the next yellow yellow would appear. The call was great: Miller took off only losing a few positions. The next yellow occurred towards the end, and most teams had to do the mandatory driver's change under green. The GM Goodwrench Service Plus Pontiac was up to second place for a time. But they would have to make one more slop for a splash of fuel. When Miller came in for gas and brakes, he lost some positions. With ten minutes to go, new brake pads and much energy, Marty was on the hunt. He started passing cars and made it up to fourth place before the checkered flag appeared. The team was happy with the fourth place finish, finish, but they really wanted to get to the podium. Everyone says it is just a matter of time, because they are always right there. Next race is Ml. Tremblant, Sept. 25-27. V Lawn Bowlers Compete For Midland-Walwyn Mixed Trebles Trophy For a little extra interest in the sport, most members members of Bowmanville Lawn Bowling club enjoyed a get-together on Aug. 14. After playing two mixed trebles games, all sat down to a sumptuous pot-luck meal plus barbecued barbecued hamburgs - Ken Dawson being the well- complimented cook. (Should have one more often!) This past Sunday, Aug. 30, we were favoured once again with excellent weather for the Midland- Walwyn Tournament sponsored by our friend, A1 MacKay. Sixteen teams from Oshawa, Peterborough, Port Hope, Whitby and Bowmanville, which were competitors fifty years and plus played to games in the form of mixed trebles. Two Bowmanville teams won their first game but fell a little short in the second - better luck next time. High two-game and trophy winners were Pat Anderson, Skip, of Oshawa with Norma Wilson and Gus Lakas scoring 33 points; 2nd high two-game winners were Alec Hawke, Skip, of Whitby with Conrad Meyer and June Hawke scoring 32 points (17 points scored against them); 3rd high two-game winners were Ken Dawson, Skip, of Oshawa Club with Len Yuill and Bernice Yuill also scoring 32 points (18 points scored against them); 4th high two-game winners were George Sweet, Skip, of Oshawa with Lois McLaughlin and Dean McLaughlin scoring 30 points. High one-game winner was Meredith McMillan, Skip, of Oshawa with Ruth McMillan and Gerri McCammon scoring 33 plus 9 points. Looks like it was Oshawa's day for winning! winning! But we are pleased so many Oshawa members support us. Final tournament of 1998 will be next Sunday, Sept. 6, which is sponsored sponsored by the Canadian Legion and will also be in the form of mixed trebles. Soccer Sponsor Receives Thanks The Bowmanville United Soccer Club designated the first home game in August as sponsor appreciation day. Our men in black would also like to thank our sponsor for the surprise pizza and pop the boys enjoyed at their next practice. Newcastle Golf Course Holds Club Championships Mason Windows Faces Tough Competition in Kitchener The Darlington Soccer Club U-12 team has just returned from the Kitchener International Soccer Tournament over Jhe weekend of August 15- 16. In our opening match, the 86'ers played the host team from Kitchener. The 8:30 a.m. kickoff time was not particularly a pleasant time to be playing a soccer match, but both teams turned in a surprisingly strong performance. Two rather soft goals gave Kitchener a comfortable lead at the half. Early in the second half, Trevor Delpippo got one back. The goal seemed to breathe new life into the 86'ers attack. When in seemed that Darlington was ready to take the match over with a penalty shot, the result of a Darlington player being dragged down in the Kitchener penalty area with seven minutes remaining, the Kitchener keeper managed a brilliant Bowmanville Men's Town League Hockey Registration (Contact Hockey) All players interested, please call Grant Brock at 623-4342 (after 6:00 p.m.) or Dave Wright at 623-2964 (after 6:00 p.m.) save to prevent the 86'ers from tieing the match. Unfortunately, the Darlington side seemed to lose their concentration on the game, and within moments Kitchener would take advantage of this by scoring a third goal for a 3- 1 win. In our second match, Hamilton Mountain would supply the opposition. Darlington controlled the match from the opening whistle eventually claiming claiming a 3-1 victory. Eighty Sixer goals were divided between Kyle Myschowoda, Devon Potter and Derek VanHcuvelen. Our third and what would be our final game of the tournament had the Mason Windows team play Sarnia. After a strong opening few minutes, the 86'crs were shocked to be down by a goal. Again hard work and determination would pay off as Darlington would fight back for yet another 3-1 win. Eighty Sixer goals were supplied by Devon Potter, Rene Cartier and Trevor Delpippo. Although the Darlington 86'ers would fail to advance in the tournament, tournament, they could take pride in the thought that Kitchener, a team they could have beaten, would go on to capture the Under-12 Championship Trophy.
