Even though we did not play both days, all the ! boys and their families t had a great lime. !• ! On the 22-23rd of ; August, the boys attended r another tournament, this [ time in Whitby. Their '■ game was against East r York. They won with a ' score of 1-0. Their second f game was against Ajax ' Premier. They were ' defeated 4-1. The next day r they played Oshawa and ! won 5-1. After this game > the team still did not know -if they made it into the semi-finals through a wild card spot until two other games were played. Finally, after two long hours, we "found" out that dicy were the wild card. 'They went up against 'Pickering, who were 3-0, in the tournament. Right ifrom the start we scored ;two goals. But right before ■the first half was up, ■Pickering scored a goal. The second half was probably probably the most exciting half the boys have ever played. The defense was able to hold off the forwards, 'which allowed us to win the game. They then went ; into the finals with Ajax. • They were defeated 5-1. 1 Afterwards the boys were ; all given a trophy to • remind them of the great . job they did that weekend. Many thanks to Whitby ; for the tournament. The Selects first contest was an early morning start against their hosts from Etobicoke. Darija Davidson got things going early as her drive eluded the Etobicoke keeper during a goalmouth goalmouth scramble. Ally Slade extended the lead to 2-Ô, as she one-timed a well placed corner kick from Allysha Chapman to the back of the net. Kailcy Reeve fired the game's third goal, finishing off a lovely cross from Sarah Healy. In the second half, Allysha Chapman completed the scoring as her blast found its mark just inside the far post. The four goal outburst was just the confidence booster that the girls needed, having scored six goals in their previous nine games, spanning two tournaments. Their second match was against the U-9 all stars from Oakville. Midway through the opening half, Brittney Sero took a perfect chip-shot pass from Kailcy Reeve and drove in all alone on the Oakville keeper, her well placed shot landing high in the twine for the game's opening goal. The Oakville net- minder kept her teammates in the game as she came up with save after save. It was not until the late stages of the second half that the Darlington Selects were able to seal the victory, as Allysha Chapman intercepted a clearing attempt and drove to the net, her shot landing just inside the far post for the 2-0 win. Despite their two previous wins, Darlington still required a win or a tic against Brams United to advance to Sunday's finals. Allysha Chapman scored the critical first goal. Early in the second half Brittney Sero sent a beautiful shot from just inside the 18 yd. line into the top corner for the game's second goal. Darija Davidson completed the scoring late in the game as she finished off a picture perfect play. The 3-0 victory assured the girls of a spot in Sunday's finals. To capture the 'A' Championship, Darlington would first have to overcome the Rockets of North Mississauga, a team that had beaten them twice, both times in thrilling 0-0 games that had to be decided by penalty kicks. After over 150 minutes of scoreless soccer, spanning 2 1/2 games, Darlington's Brittney Sero took a perfect feed from Sarah Healy between two defenders and flew in all alone, sending one just past the outstretched hands of the Rocket's keeper. Their confidence now brimming, the Selects sensed that they had their rivals on the ropes. Their pressure paid off as they were awarded a penalty penalty kick not five minutes later. Kailcy Reeve drove it high into the net for the game's second marker. Megan LeBlanc rounded out the first half scoring, as she hooked a corner kick that bent back towards the goal, deflected off of a North Mississauga player, and slid over the goal line. Darlington played a conservative conservative defensive style in the second half slamming the door on the North Mississauga attack. Protecting their three goal margin, margin, the girls celebrated a hard fought 3-0 victory and their first ever full field tournament Championship! Throughout the weekend, the girls displayed tremendous poise and discipline, as they outscored their opponents 12-0. The four shutouts were sparked by the tenacious play of the team's halfbacks and defenders: Ally Stade, Amanda Miljanovski, Alexandra Gurr, Danielle Sero, Megan LeBlanc, Kelly Moore, Alysha Benn, Melissa McDougall and Monika Howse. When a ball did make it through, Kelly Moore and Danielle Sero, who split goaltending duties, played simply flawless, dominating anything that came inside their penalty area. During the championship presentation, Brittney Sero was honoured by the Tournament Committee as the MVP of the Girls' U-9 Division. Canadian Okinawan Karate Limited presents Karate foikms ■ ■we*. QUESTION: "Telma, I have read with Interest your articles articles on flat feet, especially especially flat feet with children. children. What I don't understand understand is, why do I need to see a physiotherapist if I have flat feet?" This Is a good question. For example, did you know that all children have flat feet until about two years of age? They look like they have flat feel and this is partly due to the fat pad in the inner arch of the loot. We call this the longitudinal arch. In other words, the arch Is not fully formed until age two. All children under 2 have flat feet. Really we are talking about the child beyond age two and older who has flat feet. First of all what is this Hal foot? In medical terms we call it pes planus. A pes planus or a flat loot Is a foot that rolls In. If you look at a person from the back, you see that they are taking more weight on their Inner arch than they should and therefore therefore the foot flattens. This Is why wo call it flat foot. A flat loot affects how that person walks, you can soo this with a computerized gall analysis. Tho way tho weight Is taken by tho foot changes and if you watcli that person walk, you will notice that tho way thoy walk changos. Thoro aro Ihroo parts to walking. First tho hool strikes tho ground, thon wo roll through tho middle middle part of tho loot and then wo push oil with tho lirst and second loos. This Is normal. When a person has a lint loot, two things can happen: „ Thoy tnko too much weight through the heel on the side of the foot that is flat. You will hear, what is referred to as the elephant foot, slam, slam, slam. The heel hits much harder than it should. You can also see this in the gait scan because there is a red area under the heel. With time this will put a strain on the spring ligament under the foot, what we call the plantar fascia and the person could come down with plantar fasciitis or heel spur syndrome. The other way patients will present with flat foot is that they do not heel strike very well. Instead they roll In to the inner arch and push off. You can see this on the gait scan as well. With this kind of patient the problem will not be as much plantar fascia, but the problem will be further up the chain. In other words, if the foot Is not taking the impact of the ground well, the problem will reflect in the knees, the hips or Iho back. In the next article article we aro going to cover how having flat feel can give you a problem In your knees, your hips or your back.
