$5 Million Committed to New University Centre The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, September 9, 1998 Paste 3 by Jennifer Stone Staff Writer The Durham University Centre got a much-needed shot in the arm last Friday. The Ministry of Education and Training announced a decision to provide Trent and York Universities with over $5 million over four years in operational funding to provide provide university programming programming at Durham College. All five Durham MPPs, along with the presidents of Trent, York and Durham were on hand for the announcement. "For students and families families for whom university was not an option, now they have the best at home," said John O'Toole, MPP for Durham East. He added: "Bringing services close to the people is a common theme" of his government. The funding will allow York and Trent to expand programs and course offerings offerings to meet the enrollment demands of Durham Region. Courses through the two universities were first offered at the University Centre, housed by Durham College, in September of 1996. Three degree programs programs arc currently offered at Durham: a bachelor of arts or science from Trent, or a bachelor of administrative administrative studies from York. About 200 full-time and 2,000 part-time students arc enrolled at the Centre. "Prior to 1996, students in Durham Region who wanted a university education education had to leave home to get it," said Durham Centre MPP and Minister of Labour Jim Flaherty, who announced the funding on behalf of Minister of Education and Training Dave Johnson. Between 1991 and 1996, Flaherty said there had been an almost 25 percent increase in people between the ages of 18 and 26 in Durham Region. That age group is most likely to benefit from the availability of university courses at Durham, lie said. "This is clearly a situation situation from which everyone will benefit," he added. Much praise went to Durham College President Gary Polonsky, who started the ball rolling on the idea of offering degree courses at Durham. But lie was very humble in accepting the accolades. "You do nothing on your own. You do everything with others, through others," others," he said. The college raised a great deal of money to help fund the centre through the Creating Futures program. "Many people rightly thought it a pipe dream because no college in Ontario had ever raised $12 million before. But right now .... we have over $16 million," said Polonsky. Brides-to-be have plenty plenty of questions. Here arc a few answers from a wedding expert. Q: I plan to keep my name after we get married. How do we go about announcing this to people? A: The easiest way is to have your master of ceremonies announce the new couple as Jane Doc and John Smith. This will make a point that you will be keeping your name. Q: My parents arc paying for the entire wedding. wedding. We have a list of 125 guests but my future inlaws inlaws want to invite 225 guests. This is simply too much for my family. What can I do? A: The first thing to do is to sit down with your parents and determine a budget. Once that has been done, you can figure out a realistic number of guests. At that point, you and your fiance should sit down with his parents and explain how many guests can be invited. Q: Are there any particular guidelines to follow when tipping wedding wedding professionals? I'm not sure who to tip and how much I'll need to give them. A: Tipping all depends on the area you arc in. However, generally 15 to 20 percent is the normal normal rate for maitre d's, limousine drivers and wedding consultants. Also remember that most caterers caterers include a tip in their quote. It is not necessary to tip musicians, florists, bakers, or photographers unless they perform an extra special service. Often, clergy members arc given a small gift. Q: We are paying for our wedding. My fiance's parents say they have the right to know how much money we receive as gifts from our wedding guests. The reason they claim to need to know this information information is to know what they should give at future weddings. weddings. A: Absolutely not! It is totally inappropriate for them to even ask you for this information. The money you and your fiance receive is your own personal business.
