Over 220 kids attended the Optimist sponsored Teen Dance at Newcastle Community Hall last Friday night. On October 3 during the Fall Festival the Optimists will be judging the Bike Decorating contest contest for children 10 and under. Durham Regional Police will be doing Bike Back registrations. On Saturday, September 19, the Newcastle Horticultural Society sponsored a bus trip. In the morning a visit was paid to Unionville Village where lovely sidewalk sidewalk sales are held. One could buy furniture, dishes, dishes, buttons, cutlery, jewellery, jewellery, linens, antiques. Time for gazing on all was limited. Lunch at Town & Country was great, enjoyed by everyone. The main purpose of the trip was attendance at the Canadian Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Society International '98 World Competition. Some passengers came home with cuttings from floral arrangements and some came home with huge bouquets of huge flowers. We have not heard if anyone won any of the draw prizes. Alan Garbe, Sunday School Superintendent, conducted the promotion and presented presented each of the teachers with a gift of appreciation. For your interest, the Victoria County team is coached by Mike Ormiston, a former Durham East 4-H member (no wonder they won!). The meeting started off at Natalie and Janclle Kellogg's in Welcome, which, is near Port Hope. The purpose of our Achievement Day was to visit every member's house and see their pet and how they take care of them. Natalie and Janclle showed us their kittens and Maryann talked to us about Orono Fair and handing in our projects. At lunch we stopped off at The Morawetzes where they treated us to a swim. After lunch we visited the remainder remainder of members houses and then Maryann gathered some of our projects to put on display at Orono Fair.
