Objectors don't like the fact that the proposed driving driving range and mini-putt would sit primarily on land now designated agricultural. agricultural. But Spiro Sotiriadis, of Newcastle, whose family has been planning the venture venture for the past two years, countered detractors by saying the land has not been worked as a farm in years. "It has , never been , .farmed as long as we've., been around." The site in question is Police Briefs Pellets Hit Porch - Police are trying to find a person responsible for firing pellets at a back porch during the weekend. Durham Regional Police Sgt. Ted Dionne says two people were sitting outside on Galbraith Court in Bowmanville Sunday when two pellets hit the porch they were sitting on. Another neighbour complained of a similar occurrence. The matter is currently under investigation. Watch For Deer - A driver driver escaped without injury after ending up in a ditch when he swerved to miss two deer. The vehicle was travelling on the 401 near Lakcshore Road Saturday. The driver swerved to miss the deer, and caught the shoulder of the road, ending up in the ditch. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $1,500. Sgt. Dionne says animals near the road are "something everybody should be mindful of at any time of the year. Bank Account Cleared Out - A man managed to clean out a bank account belonging to someone else at a branch in Bowmanville last Friday. Previously it was used as a race horse farm, Sotiriadis told council. Sotiriadis added after his presentation that a driving driving range is an environmentally environmentally safe enterprise. "If you want to ever farm the land, you just go ahead and farm it." Bowmanville resident Evylin Stroud urged council council to turn down the rezoning rezoning request because she did not believe an exception exception should be made "for yet another driving range." "There is plenty of other land. Let them pick a place that is not agricultural agricultural land." , Mavis Carlton, who also', spoke against the plans, was:, .'concerned. about a potential increase in traffic if the venture went ahead "I'm not clear where the entrance would be. Will it be on the highway or a sideroad? I have concerns concerns about a driving range right on Hwy. 35." Sotiriadis indicated that plans called for a separate entrance and exit about 150 feet apart. Both would be located on the highway. He said surrounding areas were protected because of the distance from the tee- off spot and high netting. During debate on the issue, Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre noted that the stretch of highway where driving range is proposed proposed was turned into a commercial area long ago. "None of the businesses would be there now, based on permanent agriculture designation. It would seem to me the past has determined determined the future. The die has been cast." the mayor said. V . The matter was referred to staff for review and recommendations recommendations to a future council meeting. ❖ Cancer Insurance ❖ ❖ Heart Attack Insurance ❖ ❖ Stroke Insurance REGAL CAPITAL PLANNERS LTD.
