Page 4 The Clarington/Couriicc Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, September 26,1998 Zellers Under-12 Reach Cup Finals ' OK. OK. I know they didn't win their league or league cup championship, hut the Zellers Darlignton pndcr-12 girls' soccer club emerged as "Champions" in our eyes by the way they played and the sportsmanship Jhcy exhibited. On Sat., Sept. 19, they travelled to Scarborough to play in their league cup final against Pickering, the league champs. Knowing they bad a tougb task ahead of them, the girls took the play to Pickering, hoping to get pn early lead. Despite applying intense pressure in the first half, it was Pickering who scored the only goal to take the lead. In the second half, the girls gave it their best shot but Pickering was too strong and went on to win the league cup championship, i The Zcddy's team was presented with league cup finalist trophies to finish off their inaugural year in impressive fashion. It was a real leather in the cap for the players and the coaches to get to the final. The players gave Captain Zeddy and Sargcant Turvill a good soaking m appreciation of all their hard work, j The players were: Mcrissa Partington, Christina Ellul, •fCatie Turvill, Kourtney Penfound, Jana Cryderman, Katie Gardiner, Lisa Gilmore, Mandi Buma, Kathleen ^loorc, Emily Bound, Sally Bcllcrosc, Jaclyn Leddy, Emily Dewsbury, Candace Allen, and Amanda Leonard. Head coach was Ralph Cryderman, assisted by Nick Turvill. The manager was Tracy Penfound, with Melanie bardiner as trainer, and the Buma's were in charge of refreshments. | A special thanks to Zellers for sponsoring this team of £ager girls. Congratulations, Zeddys! You've grown as a learn and as young ladies. Let's not forget to thank the parents. They deserve a lot of credit for raising these fine {pris, getting them to practices and games, and most of all letting the coaches, coach. Remember and treasure the great season you had. Hockey Injuries & The Psoas QUESTION: Telma, why are groin injuries so common in hockey players and how can they be avoided? Add knees to that list of hockey-induced injuries. Believe it or not, the two often work hand-in-hand. And prevention prevention is important to consider consider for a hockey player before lacing up. From a clinical perspective, perspective, let's focus on the angle of the hip joint as a factor in these particular Injuries. Many athletes have tight PSOAS MUSCLES - very deep back muscles which run along the LUMBAR SPINE then through the front of the hip and onto the inner thigh. Its role Is twofold twofold as both a HIP FLEXOR and a BACK EXTENSOR. Chronic and long-standing tension on the psoas predisposes predisposes the athlete to standing In a stooped posture, with the hip at an unhealthy angle. When this athlete skates, he/she Is not as able to stride outward correctly. As a result, a groin and/or on Inner knoo Injury are just waiting to happen. happen. In rehabilitating those athletes, we must first address the psoas tension before the groin and knoo will heal properly. Improper or no treatment spoils ongoing trouble: trouble: the groin and knoo Injuries Injuries will reoccur and continue to plague a hockoy player for the rest of hls/hor days. Romombor, rnusclos work In groups of two: In this caso there are hip flexors and extensors working together to support the body in action. One group allows us to bend at the hip (the psoas) the other other allows us to stretch our hip backwards (the hamstrings). Thus, when the hip flexors are tight, the body's entire standing standing angle changes not just that of the hip. You are inclined forwards and your hips are more on an angle. And when this skater gets on the Ice, the additional force exerted by skating outwards creates a combination that leads to these Injuries. In treatment, the overall condition of the psoas muscle will, of course be addressed. A prescription for prevention includes stretching the psoas muscle during your warm up. Because the psoas muscle is a very deep muscle, to stretch It the patient needs to perform what are known as the Mackenzie extension-type exercises which release the front part of the hip joint. I strongly urge any athlete that has suffered groin and knoo Injuries should visit his/her physiotherapist before the hockoy season Is underway. underway. Having some muscle balancing balancing work dono may provont provont those Injuries from keeping keeping you on the bench for the season. The club, as part of its practices, offers The Cutting Edge skating program to really learn to skate. The coaching staff will teach the kids that altitude is everything, and that you do your best every time. Dryland training will also be part of the club's training. The new members will be entering 2-3 races this year to represent Clarington in short track speedskating. Practices start on Friday, October 9, from 5-7 p.m., at the Recreation Complex. Terry Fox Run Raises $17/000 Locally A thick fog on Sunday morning greeted participants at the Clarington site for the annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research. The Memorial Park Clubhouse in Bowmanvillc served as the main headquarters for registration, with participants completing lkm and 10km courses by walking, running, cycling, and in-line skating. skating. Over 125 local participants raised over $ 11,000. Both totals are up from a year ago. Newcastle Golf Course Holds Final Tourney Members at Newcastle Golf Course held their last tournament of the '98 season season on Sunday, September 20. There were 76 golfers for 19 teams in the Mixed Scramble. The format is interesting in that a member signs up and then the handicap chairperson makes up the teams. There is at least one woman per team and the total handicaps of the four golfers have to add to an average comparable to other teams. This year the spread was only three, from 69 to 72. The remarkable feat of this grouping is some of the low scores. This year's winning winning team was 11 under, for golfers that arc sometimes just meeting, plus they do not know the playing strengths of their partners to plan strategy. Obviously some teams click. But it was a beautiful day and everyone had fun. One team had the benefit of a holc-in- one on the 195 yardO , par 3, 7th hole. Bud Ray, Matt MacKay, of Oshawa, and Chris Robinson, of Orono, watched Susan Simpson, from Newcastle, make her first ace. The feat happened on her favourite hole at Newcastle Golf Course. Great drives by Chris, birdie putts by Bud, along with the 2" away from his own ace on 17 by Matt, helped the team to a -8 final score.
