Crime Stoppers Police Target Pyramid Schemes Crime Stoppers and Durham Regional Police arc asking the public to be on guard for several illegal pyramid schemes that arc operating in Durham Region and other parts of the province. The illegal pyramid schemes are all similar in nature, targeting targeting women from all walks of life. They are recruited in the work place, by friends and relatives as well as the Internet. Approximately 20 such schemes are operating under such names as "Women Helping Women", "Ladies Helping Ladies", "The Cookie Club", "The Muffin Club", "The Women's Support Group", and "The Business Women's Group". Women who become involved with a group are required to invest $5000 in cash with promises of a $40,000 return of their initial investment. Involvement is illegal under the provisions of the Criminal Code and carries a maximum penalty of up to 2 years. The pyramids quickly fall apart when there are not enough members recruited. Everyone then becomes a loser. An all-time record number of 78 members gathered around noon on a pleasant, warm day. After lunch our president president Lynda Supryka, called our meeting to Ebenezer U.C.W. The fall season started for Ebenezer U.C.W. as we met in the C.E. hall on Tuesday, September 15, at 1:30 p.m. The group was scheduled to meet at a lovely garden in Oshawa for a 'Victorian Garden Tea Party' but the weather made that impossible. impossible. So, sixteen ladies enjoyed a fun afternoon inside around tea tables set with a variety of interesting china. Pat Smith introduced our guest speaker, Eileen Kovak, owner of 'Tokens of Romance and Friendship' in Bowmanville. We heard details of the charm of tea during that long reign of Queen Victoria. The rules for Victorian etiquette were demonstrated to everyone's everyone's delight. Bernice Gay, Eileen Down, Joan Pickell and Mildred Muir gave short readings from a small book that our guest used as she spoke of the literature of that era. Pat Smith, Bev Balson and Margaret Down served tea biscuits, strawberry jam and orange marmalade and a specialty tea. Next meeting will be on our regular day, Tuesday, October 13 at 1:30 p.m. The turkey supper will be held on October 24 with more details later. order. The minutes of last year's picnic were read by our secretary/treasurer Marilyn Balson. Lynda announced this year's picnic's picnic's special event - "The Big Rundle Duck Derby". Ducks were purchased for $1 - with cash prizes to be won and the rest used for our sports prizes. A vote was taken to keep the same date (the Sunday after Labour Day), time and place, and both president and sccrctary/trcasurer are unchanged. Cindy Wilson volunteered to look after next year's sports. Our meeting was adjourned. Our sports included shoe kicks, egg races, golf ball toss, water balloon toss, 3-legged races, etc. A very amusing game of passing a grapefruit and a zucchini was won by Wendy and April Duckworth. The ju-jube guessing contest was won by Shawn Strain. Thanks to Matt Rundle for an enjoyable sports round-up. Our ducks were set afloat upstream and the two winning ducks of Glen Rundle and Ken Rundle were caught in the net. Our youngest members this year were the new 3 week old twins of Cindy and Ian, and the oldest was Mary Cann, at age 87. The visiting continued and hot dogs, corn and leftovers were served for our evening meal. 1 A wonderful day was had by all. Congratulations to newlyweds Donna and Lloyd and "thank you" for their hospitality.
