The play opens Thursday, October 2 at 'A Touch of Class' Dinner Theatre on Consumers Health Department Releases Study on Breastfeeding in Public "Enjoyable", "natural" and "rewarding" were some of the responses from parents when asked by the Durham Region Health Department to describe their experiences with breastfeeding. But they also shared stories about being asked to leave restaurants and being sent to the bathroom to feed their babies to "avoid offending others". From June through September, 1997, the Health Department surveyed parents from across Durham Region to listen to their views on breastfeeding in public places. "We wanted to find out what parents believe arc the barriers to breastfeeding in public and to learn what we can do to help support parents who choose to breastfeed," explains Bev Billings, Public Health Nurse, and co-author of the study, "Most of the people we talked to told us that for parents parents to breastfeed, they need a supportive environment. In other words, an environment that encourages them to breastfeed." In many cases parents aren't comfortable breastfeeding in public because of the negative reactions they receive from other people. They believe that people would likely accept and support breastfeeding if they were more aware of its benefits and saw more moms feeding their babies in public. Parents also suggested additional community support support groups. The Health Department has shared the results of the study with the Durham Region Breastfeeding Coalition. But Laing adds Mrs Tate gets her just desserts at the play's conclusion, and that should satisfy audiences. "Don't Tell the Wife" is the second Irish play in which she has performed. Tackling the accent isn't so tough, she says. "You just roll your Rs a bit, use a little bit of a lilt and almost sing your lines. The trick is not to overdo it," she explains.
