Page 7 Memorial Poem at Rotary Park Unveiled The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 30, 1998 A poem paying tribute to the Colville brothers and all of the young servicemen who gave their lives in World War Two was unveiled Saturday at Rotary Park. The poem was penned by Dick Watson, of Wawa, as a tribute to his wingmatc, Sandy (John) Colville, of Bowmanville. Sandy, along with his brothers Alex and Freeborn (Bill) Colville all perished while serving in World War Two. Each of the brothers was a pilot in the RCAF. Pictured above are: LCDR Rev. Doug Hall, who spoke at the dedication; Dick Watson, of 440 Squadron of the RCAF; Bill Calver, a local history buff who researched and initiated the plaque and Ed McKay, of the Canadian Fighter Pilots' Association. Campaign's Goal is Smoke-Free Homes The Durham Region's campaign for smoke-free homes is underway. "Canadians are increasingly increasingly aware of the health consequences of second hand smoke, yet the greatest greatest source of children's exposure continues to be the home," says Dr. Robert Kyle, Medical Officer of Health. "To protect everyone's everyone's health, don't allow smoking in your home", advises Dr. Kyle. The campaign includes a region-wide contest open to smokers and non-smokers. non-smokers. All participants will receive a kit designed to help create a smoke-free home. Contestants will automatically be entered into a random draw to be held the week of November 23, 1998. Prizes include a two night stay for two at Ste. Anne's Country Inn and Spa, $500 in cash, a $100 shopping spree at the Pickering Town Centre and many more. The entry deadline is November 12, 1998. The Health Department hopes the contest will provide provide people with the incentive incentive they need to declare their home smoke-free. NEW ANIMAL SHELTER - Clarington's strays now have new quarters, as a result of the completion of the Clarington Animal Shelter on Liberty St. S., in Bowmanville. Speaking at the Open House on Saturday, Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre said the facility was a long time in coming and she praised the committee .responsible for seeing the project through to its completion. Barbara Loucks will speak on Cross-Cultural Experience in Nicaragua. It was brought to our attention by our treasurer that it was time to send 'one day's pay' to World Development and Relief. Jean will take care of this for our U.C.W. We ask that anyone who has collected stamps, eye glasses, grocery store tapes, Campbell's soup labels, hearing aids - to bring these to church as soon as possible so they can be taken to the Fall Regional Meeting in early October. Betty Turcott will be attending the closing ceremonies ceremonies in Africa this November for the Ecumenical Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women, Bessie Vaneyk gave us a brief report on this event. We hope to hear much more when Betty returns.
