BOWMANVILLE COUNTRY CLUB by Telma R. Grant r.p.t. The G.A.M.E.® Plan for Your Ankle Sprain Question: Telma, I sprained my ankle a few months ago. It hurts now as much as when I first sprained it. How can you help? The G.A.M.E.® Plan stands for The Grant Approach to Musculoskeletal Evaluation and Treatment Plan. Soft tissue healing takes six weeks, but the position the joint heals in makes all the difference. In ankle sprains, the joint inverts or turns in. This is why it is the outside of the ankle joint, the ligaments and muscles which are sprained. After a sprain, the ankle joint is out of position. This is called a subluxation. The G.A.M.E.® Plan evaluates and treats the altered ankle joint position. The consequences of an ankle sprain are not confined to the ankle. The fibula, the lower leg bone that forms the outside of the ankle ends at the outside outside of the knee. The outer outer hamstring, inserts into this bone. Hence when the ankle is sprained or subluxed, the outer hamstring's hamstring's length tension is affected. This increase in tension pulls down on the pelvis on the same side as the sprained ankle. In oth er words, the subluxed ankle sets off a chain of compensations, throughout throughout the body. The net effect is that months or even years after the injury, the ankle stays in the subluxed subluxed position and results in pain. This is easier to understand if one compares compares the human body to a car. Say, the left rear wheel is out of alignment, now the whole car has a problem. It may not steer straight, the ride may be rough. The same thing happens with an ankle sprain. The whole body is affected. The G.A.M.E.® Plan is designed to evaluate how the whole body is affected after an injury. It evaluates what happens locally at the site of injury as well as how the rest of the body compensates. Clinically, the compensations often keep the original injury from healing in the proper position. Treatment is targeted targeted to both the ankle as well as the joints and muscles muscles in compensation. Give your ankle sprain the boot, call your physiotherapist physiotherapist today.
