Just by walking down the street, anyone can get a glimpse of the work being done by women through out the region as downtown downtown businesses dress up their windows with quilts of all shapes and sizes. "We were looking for a way to honour the quilt heritage in Bowmanvillc," said Carole Gould, organ- iz.cr of the Bowmanvillc events. "The windows have a theme which reflects the nature of the business and the displays are just fantastic. Everyone should come downtown this week to sec the beauty" beauty" Gould estimates there will be a quarter of a million million dollars worth of quilts on display in a number of venues. And people across the province are taking notice. "We have 11 bus tours confirmed for this week and I've already had people people coming into the store from as far away as North Bay," said Gould. "There is a real interest in quilting and it's coming from people people of all ages." Quilting activities and demonstrations arc going on in a number of venues throughout the town. The Bowmanvillc Museum is displaying a number of quilts this week that are over 100 years old, the Visual Arts Centre is fea turing the works of fabric artist Thcrcsc Kirkland and Archibald's Orchards and Estate Winery are featuring featuring a quilt display. As well, appraiser Rita Rottman will be at James Insurance on Wednesday and Gould's Cards and Gifts on Thursday to help people put a value on their 'The windows have a theme which reflects the nature of the business and the displays are just fantastic" -Carole Gould family quilts. Bowmanvillc churches are also getting into the spirit of quilt week with $6 lunches at Trinity United on Friday and at St. Paul's on Saturday. "The events have snowballed, snowballed, but seeing all of these quilts out on display is a wonderful opportunity," opportunity," said Gould. "Quilting is an art form women have been working on for centuries." centuries." Bowmanvillc's Quilt Heritage Week activities were set up by Gould at the request of the Durham Trillium Quilters' Guild. The big event for the region is the Quilt Extravaganza at Camp Samac Council Hall in Osliawa on Friday and Saturday. There will be more than 200 items on display, including the work of the Durham Trillium Quilters' Guild. As well; there will be a quilt raffle, demonstrations and a fashion fashion parade. Admission to the Extravaganza is $4. Plans are already under way for next year's Bowmanvillc Quilt Heritage Week which, Gould promises, will be even bigger than this year.
