One of the advantages or disadvantages -- of having having "Canadian" in the name of our paper is that we periodically periodically receive information that has little to do with our immediate immediate coverage area. Although interesting, but of little relevance locally, most of these items are designated for the news department. One press release that managed to channel its way onto the sports desk was sent by Interbrew, owners of the Toronto Blue Jays. It had to do with last week's announcement about Interbrew's plans to seek an alternative alternative home for the Toronto Blue Jays next season if a favourable lease agreement can't be worked out with SkyDomc Corporation. The current agreement expires in November, and another deal has yet to be put in place. As a bargaining ploy, Interbrew issued a non- refundable $50,000 cheque to ensure that the wrecking ball won't complete its job at Exhibition Stadium, giving giving Interbrew an alternative home park. Now, there is as little chance of the Blue Jays playing at Exhibition Stadium next season as there is of them playing home games down at Soper Creek Park. What Interbrew has essentially done is to use the media as a bargaining tool to get a better agreement at SkyDomc. They haven't come right out and said they are moving the team's home games, but rather worded there comments to the effect that "the Blue Jays have notified SkyDomc Corporation that it will not exercise the option to renew its lease under the existing terms." Well, who does? When was the last time you heard a player, or team, state that the previous contract they had signed would be renewed on the expiration date, with no changes? What Interbrew wants to accomplish is to sway public public support against SkyDomc, hoping to exact a better deal for themselves. Certainly the fans don't want to have to sit at Exhibition Stadium to watch games, where, on the opening day in April of 1977, snow covered covered the field for the team's first-ever game in franchise history. And do you remember the game that had to be called because the wind was so strong Toronto pitcher Jim Clancy was blown off the mound? It's the good guy versus bad guy scenario that has kept wrestling promoters in business for years, and a tactic that has been perfected by the Progressive Conservatives since taking over the province. In this scenario, the good guys are Interbrew, while the mean and nasty guys are SkyDomc. In the press release, Interbrew stresses their commitment commitment to "field a competitive team in 1999." And also observe that "ownership is dedicated to the longterm longterm health of the franchise." With the strong finish the Blue Jays had to the past season, Interbrew promises that they can "build on the Blue Jays' success last season." season." All the team needs is a "realistic stadium lease at market rate to help us achieve our goal." So, you see, it's quite simple. All that has to be done is for the media and fans to put a little pressure on SkyDomc to help Interbrew get a better deal. Fans can't expect to see the benefits of a better economic economic deal with lower ticket prices. However, it's a good guess that the next press release will deal with an increase in ticket prices. After all, how are the poor people at Interbrew expected to afford the outlandish contract demands of stars like Carlos Delgado and Jose Canseco? "Players arc holding the fans of the great game of baseball hostage by requesting lens of millions of dollars dollars a year," the first paragraph of the press release will state. And thus, the whole good guy versus bad guy scenario is in place again. Darlington Soccer Club Inc. INDOOR SOCCER 98/99 STILL TIME TO REGISTER! Statesman Post Shutout Over Ajax Friday, October 23, saw The Canadian Statesman Major Novice Toros travel to Ajax to meet the Knights. The Toros hit the ice flying and constantly pressured the Ajax net, only to be turned back by some outstanding goaltending. Late in the first, Brock Murphy made a fine individual effort to get the Toros a 1-0 lead. In the second, the boys continued their pressure and saw goals from Luke Pither on a long feed from Zak Snowden and Kurtis Allen scoring a beauty with assists to Brandon Castellan and Mike Berney to stake the team to a 3-0 lead. In the third, Brandon Ernst set up Mitch Callieu for the Toros fourth goal and then Ernst and Denver Brown combined to set up Pither for the final Toros goal for a 5-0 win. Jory Fuller and Scott Junkin shared the shutout. Saturday, October 24, saw the Aurora Tigers come to Darlington Arena to meet the Toros. The Toros dominated play from the drop of the puck, but again were turned back by top notch goaltending goaltending and entered the second period behind 1-0. The Tigers came on strong in the second period and moved to a 3-0 lead before Brown and Callieu set up Murphy to get the Toros on the scoreboard. The third period saw end-to- end action, but strong goaltending resulted in a 3-1 Aurora win. Sunday, October 25, saw the Toros travel to Newmarket to meet the Redmcn with Coach Ralph Murphy hoping the extra hour of sleep for the boys would see his squad full of energy for the game. As usual, the coach was correct and saw the boys jump to a quick 1-0 lead with Pither finishing off a sharp passing play from Daniel McCarthy and Castellan. The Redmcn came right back and evened the score. The enthusiastic crowd saw end-to-end action before Pither notched his second goal on a set up from Murphy. In the third, Pither attained his hat- trick with assists to Allen and Snowden as the Toros rolled to a 3-1 win.
