But, when the Orono resident is racing, it isn't in the traditional "turn left" mode around the track that is customary with stock cars. His race is an all-out sprint on a quarter-mile track against other drag racers. "I like the adrenalin rush you get at the start of a race, and the competition," competition," he says from the garage of his Orono home while overlooking the sleek '69 Chevy Nova that he races. This past season at Shannonville, Fice finished finished fifth overall in the points standings out of 30 competitors in the Super Pro Division. The season included a feature win at Shannonville on September 13, and another victory in a special race held at Cayuga Speedway October 3. His previous best finish was a fourth overall a couple of years ago. After struggling early on in the racing season, Fice credited his late season season victories to an improved start. "The race is won or lost at the starting line. The driver with the best reaction reaction time wins" says the 36-year-old. Though fans of the sport see the cars run for only 10.6 seconds during a race, there is a lot of work that goes into the preparation preparation of the car before it pulls up to the starting line and peels away. "The races arc over really quick, but there is a lot of sweat and work that goes into making sure the car has consistent runs," says Fice. On race day, drivers are required to complete three time trials in the morning before advancing further. Depending on the number of entries, it could take as many as six or seven rounds before reaching the finals. Luckily for Fice, he has a strong supporting cast that enables him to race. Paul Sylvester helps out on the technical side as a comechanic. comechanic. His cheering section on race days includes his wife, Shirley, and kids Heather 4, and Brian 1, who travel to each outing. It's only one example example of the fact that this sport is a family affair for many of the drivers. "Everybody gets along because we are all in it for the fun," says Fice of the camaraderie among the racing fraternity. "We aren't out there trying to run each other off the track." Climbing the ladder from Street Stock, to Sports, to Super Pro, Fice is content to stay in his current class. To go higher would require an influx of more money. "Racing is just a hobby for me. If it turned into anything more, that would be nice. But I'm not going to push it. I could see it turning into more if Mosport built a track and I could stay a little closer to home and race." As it is now, he is thankful for the sponsorship sponsorship he receives from Karbclt Oshawa, Auto Zone in Whitby, and Jack Van Veen who is a Snap- On dealer in Whitby. It's the sponsorships that allow drivers to keep out-of- pocket expenses to a minimum. minimum. And, like any other driver, they arc always interested in hearing from other potential backers. "There is always room for more," he says of the space left on the car for sponsors. DRAG RACER - Dan Fice stands in front of the 1969 Chevy Nova that he used to finish fifth overall out of 30 competitors in the Super Sport Drag Racing class at Shannonville Speedway this past summer. Cars can reach speeds of up to 126 mph during during a race that last just over 10 seconds on a quarter-mile track. The Orono resident would like to see a drag strip constructed at Mosport in the future. Mackie Automotive Off to a Strong Start The Mackie Automotive Toros have come out flying.
