P;i«:c (i The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillc, November 4, 1998 Bowmanville in Australia '! Imagine my delight. I 'was walking through the ; historic section of Sydney. ■Australia known as the i Rocks when an advertisc- ! ment in a shop window 'caught my eye. It was for yTillcy hats and the ad (claimed that an elephant ■'trainer had his hat taken •off his head three different times by an elephant. The elephant, apparently, ate the hat each time. The .trainer waited each time for nature to lake its course, cleaned the hat and wore it again. The ad was to show the durability of the hat. It named the elephant and Graduate Michael John Rene Thomas John and Jane Thomas arc pleased to announce that their son Michael John Rene Thomas has successfully successfully completed an intensive nine month course at the International Academy of Merchandising and Design in Computer Animation and is currently currently in a Teaching Assistant position in this same institute. Congratulations to our son on a "job well done". the trainer. The elephant's home, according to the ad was the Bowmanville Zoo! Excited, I rushed into the shop to tell the clerk that I lived in Bowmanvillc. Unfortunately, the clerk spoke very little English. I tried to explain that my home, on the other side of the planet, was highlighted in her shop window. Try as I might, I couldn't couldn't get her to understand my message. Exasperated, 1 finally pointed at the ad and blurted out, "I know the elephant." This made perfect sense to her and left me more confused. Smiling, I left the shop, took one more look at the ad about home and continued continued on my way. If you get to Australia, make sure that you head up to Queensland. The Great Barrier Reef runs along the coast and a charter charter boat will take you to some of the world's best scuba diving and snorkelling. I chose to go to Lady Musgrave Island, about 60 miles off the coast of Bundaberg. The island is made up entirely of coral, yet is covered in vegetation. vegetation. One of the boat's crew members explained that over the years, bird droppings littered the island. Inside the droppings droppings were seeds. Between the droppings and the The Traveller seeds germinating, eventually eventually a thin organic layer covered parts of the island and supported the vegetation vegetation we now walked through. The swimming area was a natural indentation in the reef resembling a submerged pool. The walls of the pool were never further further than a few feel below the surface of the water. This natural barrier prevented prevented sharks from getting' into our area. Sharks arc plentiful in Australia and many precautions arc taken to keep swimmers from becoming one's lunch including special shark nets set up around a lot of the popular beaches. The sea life is unbelievably unbelievably beautiful along the reel". Hundreds pf fish of different sizes and colours swam alone or in huge schools all around us. The boat sold disposable underwater cameras and I quickly went through my roll of film taking pictures of the coral and sea life. Australia is full of odd looking animals like the koala, the wombat and the duck-billed platypus. I decided that the best place to see them would be in a game park. Many have special pens where you can hand feed the wildlife. But beyond a doubt, the highlight of the trip was having my picture taken cuddling a koala. The special koalas arc kept in a separate area with a trainer who often has the animals tugging at their pant leg to be picked up. The koala is passed to you and holding it like a baby, you feel it rest its head upon your shoulder. It is truly one of those magical moments in life and very few want to hand the koala back to the trainer. Just a note, to truly cuddle cuddle a koala, you have to be in Queensland. New South Wales law requires that you hold a pillow with the animal perched atop for pictures and discourages direct contact between you and it. Happy travels.
