Letter to the Editor Don't Cut Back Funds On Special Education Dear Editor: I am frustrated at the current situation in our local public high schools. Proposals have been put through to slash special education, guidance and library services. At Clarke High School three full lime special education education resource teachers will be reduced to .67 teacher. Other high schools in the area will be similarly reduced. The resource teachers deal with identified behavioural, behavioural, gifted and learning disabled disabled students. The largest majority being the latter. Durham Region Defends Schools Facing Closure Durham's regional council has come to the defence of schools that may be closed to save school boards money. Regional council voted unanimously to support a resolution from the Township of West Nissouri calling for the provincial government government to introduce legislation that will properly fund school boards to ensure that rural schools are not forced to close. In addition to supporting supporting the resolution from the township, regional councillors also passed a resolution indicating that schools outside rural areas should also receive sufficient sufficient funds to continue operating. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish said, "it is up to municipalities to speak in opposition to school closings because school trustees and school hoards' 1 no longer have sufficient clout." "They are now just branch plants of the Ministry of Education," said Mayor Parish.
