The Traveller by Rob Evans Montreal should be considered right near the top of your list of weekend weekend getaway destinations. destinations. Getting there is a simple choice of 1, 2, 3. 1. An easy 4 1/2 hour drive, 2. A four hour train ride, 3. A quick and cheap, 1 hour flight. My favourite part of the city is the old town. It has a strong resemblance to a European community community with its tiny cobbled stone streets filled with interesting shops and cafes, enough to keep you busy for hours. Begin your tour of old Montreal with a caleche ride. The horse drawn buggies travel at a comfortable comfortable pace as the driver driver keeps up a constant commentary on the history, history, architecture and other points of interest along your route. They arc a wealth of information and don't mind answering answering any and all of your questions. A ride will cost you about $30 for a 1/2 hour and $50 for a full hour tour. Following your tour you will want to walk around and visit many of the sights you passed. A must stop is the Notre-Dame Basilica. Located at 110 Notre- Dame West, it was built between 1824 and 1829. Inside you'll find one of the largest pipe organs in the world, awe inspiring stained glass windows and a wonderful array of detailed - woodwork "carved into much of the ' structure. There is no fee to visit, but a donation box is set up near the exit and it wouldn't hurt to throw a loonie or two in on your way out. At the corner of Notre-Dame and Saint Sulpice you will find a miniature version of Manhatten's Empire State Building. Completed ten years before in 1921 by the same architect, the building building is supposed to be the model for its much larger and more famous twin. At the intersection of Rue de la Commune and place d'Youville is Point- a-Callicre, one of the most amazing museums I have visited. The majority majority of exhibits are below ground and are the actual stone ruins of the original European settlers dating back to the mid 1600's. Interactive holograms at various points help keep you informed, or you can walk with a guided lour if you wish. As you walk through time you will forget that above your head is the hustle and bustle of the modern city. All visitors to the old part of town eventually end up at Place Jacques- Cartier. This street mall is lined with terraced restaurants and is always a hub of activity. Street performers and colourful characters add to the almost circus like feel of the place. The original cobble stones have been removed from the street and replaced with smooth pavers. According to one local, this was done following following too many complaints complaints of broken high heels. At the top of Place Jacques-Cartier is City Hall, or Hotel de ville. Il was from the balcony that looks down on the old town that Charles DeGaulle tillered his famous, "Vive Ic Quebec fibre!" in 1967. Those words were quickly followed followed by the Canadian government's own, "We think you had better go home now Charles". Montreal, of course has much more to offer than just the old part of town, but the charm of 300 year old buildings and small streets should not be missed. Speaking English in Montreal has never been a problem for me and I have always found its citizens to be warm and friendly hosts. I know that if you choose to visit, you'll love it too. Bon voyage and happy travels. Your Shoulder Pain is on the Cuff Question: "Telma, I have shoulder pain and I've been told that I have rotator cuff tendonitis. How can physiotherapy help?" The rotator cuff is a set of four muscles of the shoulder. They are so-called because they form a cuff for the shoulder joint. Three are in the back and one is in the front. The rotator cuff muscles muscles connect the shoulder blade to the upper arm, which is the humerus via tendons. tendons. When the tendons become inflamed, the result is rotator cuff tendonitis, or inflammation of the tendons. Sports where athletes are particularly prone to rotator cuff tendonitis include golf, baseball, tennis and swimming. The important thing in treatment with respect to rotator cuff tendonitis is to realize the principle that no muscle operates, independently, independently, all muscles work in pairs and they pull against one another like a pulley system. system. In the shoulder, one of the muscles that works with the rotator cuff is the chest muscles called the pectora- lis. What happens when you get rotator cuff tendonitis is that the length tension of the muscles, and therefore the tendons have been changed. ^ 1P - The most common presentation presentation is that the shoulder joint, or the humerus or upper arm, turns in and forwards. We say it internally rotates and anteriorizes. When this happens, happens, not only is the rotator cuff or tendon painful, but also the chest muscles, or pectorals, form very tight knots in them that keep the rotator cuff from functioning properly. This happens in each and every case where rotator cuff tendonitis results. Therefore, in treatment, simply treating the rotator cuff itself, where the tendon is hurt, is not sufficient to resolve the problem. As much as the tendon is now overstretched, the front of the shoulder joint, because of the chest muscles, or pectoralis muscles, are now overtightened. Treatment involves restoring the proper length tension of both set of muscles, muscles, taking out the knots, what we call trigger points, in the chest muscles, as well as treating the inflammation in the rotator cuff tendon.
