The meeting will be held at the Recreation Complex beginning at 7:30 p.m. Anyone interested in serving on the executive or helping out next season is invited to attend. Another Coaching Casualty For Bowmanville Eagles It might be suggested to Bowmanvillc Eagles General Manager Mike Laing that he enlist the services of a "headhunter" "headhunter" to hire his next coach. Only 18 games into his rookie campaign as head coach of the hockey club, Don Howse was relieved of his duties early last week. He becomes one of the earliest coaching casualties of the season season in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. Though he wasn't the first coach to go. That distinction belonged to Carey Durante, who was fired only a couple of games into the pre-season. The common denominatorr in both firings was that Laing was the one who pulled the trigger. Hence the need to enlist professional assistance during the next round of interviews. "The bottom line is that (Howse) and the players just were not gel-ing," said Laing, who is becoming an expert at the art of answering questions regarding the firing of a coach. Although, he has had more practice then most. Deeming the firing a "mutual parting," Laing added that "things just weren't getting any better, and there were a number of reasons things weren't working. Don tried everything he could, but nothing was working and we both thought a change would be good." Assistant GM Jim Heffering has assumed the head coaching duties on an interim basis. He was behind the bench for the two weekend losses against Auburn and Wellington, though Howsc's name still appears on the official game sheet as head coach. Heffering's assistant, assistant, for now, is Rick Lelorl, who began the season as the OMHA/York Simcoc 'AA' contact for the Clarington Toros. Kevin Hulin, who was hired at the start of the season as an assistant coach, quit the hockey club after he was snubbed as Howsc's replacement. For those scoring at home, that brings the total number of coaches to leave the Eagles since training camp opened to five. And the changes aren't over yet. Laing acknowledged acknowledged that the club is seeking another assistant coach, and hinted at making some changes to the roster by the end of the month. Admittedly weak on defense, but feeling he has lots of firepower up front, Laing says he hasn't overrated the talent on this year's club. This analysis comes despite the team's mediocre 7-12-1 start to the season, and their embarrassing 1-9 record on home ice. "We have a team that can compete, but we have to be ready to compete every night," he said. As for hiring another head coach, Laing said he is not "actively seeking" anybody at the time. Which makes sense. Anybody worth hiring should already have a coaching job. But this is the Eagles, after all. And this season, they have redefined, the phrase "Coaches are hired to be fired." Canadian Statesman Major Novice Toros Compete in Mid-Fall Classic Tournament The weekend of November 6-8 saw the Canadian Statesman Major Novice Toros participate participate in the Mid-Fall Classic sponsored by Laing, McHardy and Rohr. In round robin play, the Toros dominated their games, beating the Aurora Tigers 5-0. Brampton Battalion 8-1 and Syracuse Stars 7-0. In the semi-finals, the Toros met the Pickering Panthers in an early morning morning game. Early in the 1st, Denver Brown sent Luke Pither away for an end to end rush to get the Toros on the scoreboard. In the second, the awesome attack came to life with four more un-answered goals. David Miller finished finished off a beautiful 3-way passing play from Pither and Robert O'Shea. Pither notched his second from Brandon Ernst and Brown. Brock Murphy scored with assists to Wade Pickcll and Miller. Daniel McCarthy rounded out the scoring with a beauty from the slot assisted by Kurtis Allen and Brandon Castellan. The finals pitted the Toros against the Aurora Tigers who were out to avenge their loss from Friday. The Tigers came out flying and dominated play in the 1st, taking a 1- 0 lead into the middle of the second period before Hobb Bakker Bergin Hill Drop Decision to Pickering A late game surge wasn't enough to push the Hobb Bakker Bergin Hill Minor Peewee "A" Toros past Pickering last Wednesday. The Toros had difficulty getting started and found themselves down by a score of 3-0 before the team scored a goal at the 3:43 mark of the second period. The goal was scored by Matt Savoie with John DcMillc and Adam O'Connell drawing assists. Pickering regained its three goal lead by the end of the second period. The Toros fought back in the third period by scoring two goals to narrow the Pickering lead to 4 to 2. The Toros second goal was scored by Jeff Perron when he one timed a nice feed from Adam O'Connell into the corner of the Pickering net. Also assisting on the play was Cory Bruinsma. DeMille then made it 4 to 3 a minute and thirty-three thirty-three seconds later with assists going to Savoie and Devon Potter. Penalties, which had been a problem for the team all night, continued to be a problem in the third period preventing the team from applying consistent pressure on the Pickering team. The Toros were not able to score the equalizer, falling to the Panthers 4 to 3. McCarthy netted a hard wrist shot to tic the score. Assists went to Castellan and Carl Andrews. The third period was filled with end-to-end action with Aurora taking the lead again before McCarthy sent Castellan away on a breakaway to tie the score and send the game into overtime. The first overtime overtime period saw the Toros have to dig deep to kill off a 5 minute major penalty and enter the 2nd overtime period. The second overtime overtime period treated fans to some outstanding goaltending goaltending before Mitch Callicu sent Allen Dillon up ice for the game and tournament winner. Outstanding goaltending goaltending was provided by Scott Junkin and Jory Fuller. Halminen Homes Toros Continue Hectic Pace With Three More Wins The Halminen Homes "AA" Novice Toros continued with their torrid pace over the weekend with three out of town wins. This was the second time and the opposition seemed to be trying a new tactic in slowing the boys down. In the rough and tumble affairs, especially against Belleville, where the refs pocketed their whistles, the Toros still came out on top. Victories over Belleville (9- 1 ), Vaughan (10-1), Whitby (13-1), leave the boys undefeated. undefeated. Point Parade Point-getters over the weekend where Keegan Lawson- (lg,3a), Kyle Robertson (lg), Justin Stabler (3a), Greg Nemisz (7g,3a), Matthew Garrison (4g,la), Nicholas Diachenko (la), John Bull (2g,3a), Chad McPaul (lg), James Hoffman (8g,3a), Matthew Perron (2g,3a), Chris Rivest (2a), Andrew Bobas (4g,la) and Brady Burns (2g,5a). Although solid when called upon, strong defence by McPaul, Diachenko, Rivest, Robertson, Chad McDonald and Matt Pedon made the goaltcnding duties relatively easy for Derek Walker and Zack Higgins. The Unionville game was an entertaining game for the spectators despite the loss. Jason Emond scored the only goal unassisted. unassisted. In Keswick, the boys started with a strong effort and were rewarded with a two goal lead half-way through the second period. The first goal was scored by Jordan Thompson when lie slipped the puck under the goalie's pad. Scott Parsons and Robb Gurr tallied assists. Then, a nifty pass play from Emond to Eric Gray to Ian Watt, who went high on the goalie, put Clarington in front 2-0. In the dying minutes of the second period, Keswick scored four unanswered goals to pull ahead 4-2, but with eleven seconds left, Gray scored to draw Clarington within one goal. Clarington oulshot Keswick in the third period period 10 to 9, but Clarington could not get the puck in the net on a number of good scoring opportunities, opportunities, while Keswick look advantage of all their opportunities and scored four more goals to make a final score 8-3. In exhibition action, the Selects lost to StouITville 3-2 despite outshooting them 28 to 13. StouITville scored in each period, while Clarington scored both goals in the third period.
