Still No Deal For Public Teachers by Jennifer Stone Stall Writer Talks held last week between local high school teachers and the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board did nothing to bring the two sides closer together, says a union official. official. "We made no progress," said Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation Local President Dave Nicklc of last Thursday's round of talks. The talks, which broke off at about 2:30 a.m. Friday, were aimed at achieving a collective agreement for teachers. Educators have been working without a contract since the school year began in September. The major issue in the dispute is the clement of Bill 160, the province's Education Improvement Act, which requires teachers to teach an additional 25 minutes a day. Most boards have translated the requirement into an extra period of leaching per day. As a result, some teachers have been in the classroom for four out of four periods. "The problem we're having right now is that our members arc incredibly incredibly stressed," stated Happy 25th Birthday Lori H Love, Dad and Mom Wishing JfiRED Stender fl HAPPY 5th birthday! High school teachers with the public board withdrew voluntary services, services, such as coaching and advisory roles, at the beginning of the school year. Nicklc said the situation situation is not likely to change in the foreseeable future. "Teachers teaching four periods do not have time to offer voluntary services. What we're finding is that people arc prioritizing and obviously their professional professional obligations have to be prioritized," he said. The two sides will meet again November 25. Nickle said the two sides are also attempting to schedule talks for early December. Police say a driver failed to stop at a stop sign and his vehicle was thrown over 40 metres into a field, rolling several times. Two passengers in the vehicle were taken to Lakeridge Health, Bowmanvillc (formerly Memorial Hospital). One passenger, a 22-year-old man, was treated for major injuries. Bill Phipps, Moderator of the United Church of Canada, speak at a forum sponsored by Faith United Church in Courlicc. The visit is part of the Bay of Quinte Conference which secs the moderator lour communities between Oshawa and Kingston and points north. It's a tour that, Phipps says, is important important to the Church. "This allows us to connect connect with a lot of people and gives us a pulse of the congregation across the country," he said. Rev. Phipps, a somewhat somewhat controversial figure when he first took office, spoke to the crowd about how the market has become paramount. "The market has become the sole criterion of human welfare," he said. "It's the market that determines social factors, and it's the market that determines what is important." important." "In the news, as a mark of how we evaluate how we're doing as a society it is the value of the markets. We wouldn't think of putting putting the literacy rate up there." The market determines how we arc doing and what decisions we will make and the proof, he said, is in the numbers. "The gap between the rich and the poor is growing growing because of our devotion devotion to the market. The 450 billionaires in the world today have the same assets as two-and-a-half billion people. That is obscenity of the highest order," he observed. He urged the people to work to chjtnge the markul economy to better the social condition. "We people of the bible have as much to say as Conrad Black or Paul Martin," he said. "I think the opportunities for change are really possible because we are a middle class church that understands understands how the market works. They arc growing faster that McDonald's and Tim Horton's," lie said. "I think it's immoral that anybody go to bed hungry in this wealthy, wealthy land." Right Rev. Phipps also took time to address questions questions from the audience ranging from native land settlement issues to the status of gays and lesbians in the Church. "The United Church has been forthright, courageous courageous and open about its view of human sexuality," he said. "We give people who want to make a lifelong lifelong commitment tire same opportunity to make tire commitment in public with their friends as wc do to those who arc heterosexual. heterosexual. I think we should celebrate celebrate the fact that people want to sanctify their love for each other." The message the United Church wants to give the public, he added, is that you can go and be accepted accepted for who you arc without judgement. Rev. Bill Phipps was elected Moderator in 1997 and is widely known for his commitment to social justice. He is on leave from his position as a minister minister at Scarboro United Church in Calgary, Alberta, and plans to return to that post once his term expires in August 2000. During his term as moderator he hopes to help congregations recover "the confidence that they can take risks and be important spiritual and political force in the community and Canadian society." Rev. Phipps spoke at the invitation of Faith United Church's minister, Rev. Dick Prince, who acknowledges that some of the moderator's past statements have caused controversy. "He brings the bigger Church to us and represents represents a position for the Church," he said. "Some Moderators bring us real challenges and some are more pastoral - Rev.
