The town is purchasing a new recreation software system, to be put in place in time for early 1999 registration registration Currently, the community community services department has several computer and paper-based systems in place to handle the booking, booking, registration and membership membership management needs. But, Joseph Caruana, director of community community services, says these systems arc no longer operating efficiently. "The current system was made specifically for use by our department and docs not allow us to interface interface with other areas," he said. "Our intent is to get a new program up and running running to provide an efficient and effective service to the public." The problem, said Mayor Diane Hamre, is that the municipality is growing so fast that the demand for services has increased dramatically. "This municipality has gone through phenomenal growth in the last six to eight years and we haven't increased our staff. In fact, we've down sized our staff," she said. "Sometimes I think we take our staff for granted. This new program will allow us to increase efficiency efficiency and take some of the pressure off our staff." The new software, at a cost of about $30,000, is an investment for the municipality. But the money has already been set aside in the capital budget. "All the bells and whistles whistles arc available, but we're not interested in that right now," said Caruana. "We just want to get it up and running." The new program could eventually cover everything everything from program registration registration and facility booking booking to touch-tone registrar tion and scheduling. Once the basic system is set up,- additional modules can bp purchased as funds are available through the annual budget process. The municipality is arowinq so fast the j demand for services : has increased dramatically "Eventually we would like to see people register for programs from the library or mall," said Caruana. The program will be purchased from Escom Software Services. Currently, Escom Software Services has about 45 Ontario municipalities municipalities using their recreation recreation software program. "Most of the Region is using this system and it has proven to be an exceptional exceptional piece of software," Caruana said. "The package package provides us with a variety of different models that will take us into the next century."
