Volleyball Champions Congratulations to the boys' volleyball team at Knox Christian School for their championship victory at a two-day tournament they hosted over the weekend. A total of 29 boys' and girls' teams from across the province were entered. The Knox girls placed fourth in their division. Bring Back The Tractors Dear Sirs It has been been brought to our attention recently that in an edition of The Canadian Statesman, there was a picture caption, "The Zamboni does a final Hood..." We note the prominent mention of our trademark "Zamboni" and its proper capitalization. However, we would like to point out that the unit shown in the picture is not a Zamboni lee Resurfaccr, and was produced by a different manufacturer. We introduced the first ice resurfaccr to the sports world almost 50 years ago and it has been copied but never duplicated. duplicated. We've invested much money, effort and pride to make and keep Zamboni products the best available. As a result, for many people the Zamboni name has become synonymous with ice resurfacing machines. Please remember that our trademark is always an adjective (..a Zamboni Ice Resurfaccr) and never a noun (...zamboni). If we can provide any additional explanation or information, please let us know. Yours truly, Frank J. Zamboni <£ Co., Ltd. Executive Vice-President It's a difficult period in the '90's for us editorial _■ types who have to distinguish between machines that clean the ice as being either an ice resurfaccr, or a ' Zamboni; people who skate outdoors as wearing in- ' line skates or roller blades; and being careful not to refer to gym equipment as nautilus machines, as previous previous letters from other companies have so eloquently eloquently pointed out. Typically Canadian -- One of the most common observations about the game of basketball made by Canadian broadcasters is that a fan only needs to watch the final two minutes of the game to be a witness witness to the entire outcome. 1 The same can be said of most Grey Cup games, which was proven again during Sunday's game ' when the outcome wasn't decided until the final play of the game. And in the semi-finals, the same held . true for the Eastern Conference game when a field . goal on the final play produced a victory. Strange though, that in both instances, the games were credited as being thrilling contests, with fantastic fantastic finishes. Untypically Canadian -- As a whole, Canadian athletes are often credited with having a lot of heart. Which doesn't explain why a Canadian trainer threw in the towel while a Canadian fighter was getting paid $400,000 to box in a championship fight. If the argument is that Otis Grant is a teacher who spends a lot of time with youth, and already has a full-time job outside of boxing, then quit now before accepting another cheque to step into the ring. Countdown -- For those who have started office pools and want to know, the number is now up to four games since the Bowmanvillc Eagles Jr. A hockey club made their last coaching change. Generals Increase Winning Streak to Three Games The Osliawa Generals increased their winning streak to three games on Sunday night with a convincing convincing 6-1 victory over the Sarnia Sting in an OUI. league game played at Oshawa's Civic Auditorium. Derrell Upton had a pair of goals and an assist for the Generals, who led 2-0 alter the opening period, period, and 5-1 after the second. second. Brian Passmore, Jim Baxter, Brandon Coalter, and Trevor Gillies had one apiece for Osliawa, who improved their record on the season to 10-9-2. Goaltender Tyrone Garner contributed to the victory at both ends of the rink. He slopped 19 of 20 shots, and was inactive in the third period, as Sarnia failed to register a shot on goal in the final frame. Garner also helped out offensively, picking up a couple of assists. Allowing just six goals in his past three starts, Garner was named the Generals player of the week. Earlier victories came in road games against Belleville and Kingston. In total, lie faced 100 shots and made 94 saves in the three games. The 20-year-old nctmhulcr is the properly of the Calgary Flames of the NHL. Go Kart Racer is in the Fast Lane As another season of racing at Mosport Kart Club has now come to an end, fans and participants will have to wait until next year to get back on the track. For one local driver, Chris Hart, next spring could not arrive soon enough. After a very successful successful season, Chris is now left with strong aspirations aspirations for the future. Successful Driver Six years ago, Chris and his father, Bob, decided decided to become involved in Canada's fastest growing sport, Go-Kart racing. Learning along the way, Chris has become a very successful driver at many competitive levels. Some of his achievements include: Junior Champion of the Durham Kart Club in Goodwood; Rookie of the Year honours at both the Senior and Junior levels; levels; as well as being twice voted the Most Sportsmanlikedriver in his class. Despite Hart's past achievements, the 1998 season was superior to all others. Hart was involved in the research and development development of a brand new chassis. With seven victories victories on the season, Chris was able to clinch the championship after only half of the season's races. With championship in hand, Chris then decided to try his skills in other classes. Having previous experience experience in only four cycle classes, Chris was new to the challenge of two-cycle racing. It wasn't long before Chris decided the higher speed was right for him. However, he was not able to be very competitive with the use of older and borrowed equipment. In spite of running at the front of the pack, Hart still impressed onlookers mov ing his was up the field from the back and through the middle of the pack. Top Speeds After a recent lest run in a six speed "shifter kart," Chris has decided this is the class for him. With a 125cc, two stroke engine, the cart can reach speeds of 120mph. "An inch from the ground and less than that from the kart beside you," is how Hart explains the racing. TOP DRIVER - Go Kart racer Chris Hart has become a successful driver at the Mosport Kart Club. Some of the titles he has earned during his career includes Junior Champion, Rookie of the Year, and Most Sportsmanlike Driver. His machine is capable of reaching speeds of 120 mph. v ' PONTIAC t^lBUICK EE3 CMC NO SECURITY DEPOSIT f '99 Pontiac Sunfire Sedan Who says Sedan drivers have to give up styling and performance.
