The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 25, 1998 Section Two Page 5 Students Face Choices On Post-Secondary Education by Jennifer Somerscales Making decisions for the future can be a weighty responsibility. Especially when you're planning for post secondary education. Over the years, options for high school students have grown to be more and more competitive and some are asking themselves themselves this question: College or University - which is better? At Bowmanville High School, many students arc beginning to take the college college route. Last year there were 129 applicants to colleges colleges across Canada and about 71 students applied to university. Though the number of students from B.H.S. applying to university has been fairly constant over the last few years, Brian Colville, a guidance counsellor counsellor at B.H.S., explained that "the number of college college applicants is growing BHS News at a very, very rapid rate compared to university." The choices are endless for some students. And often that can lead to a variety of pressures concerning concerning where they're going to be the following year. Students tend to have their favourite schools, mostly decided by friends and/or word of mouth. Western was a major contender contender for students last year and Queen's has drawn many applicants as well. "It seems to be very much a factor within the graduating class' of what they talk about. I know they compare notes on programs and they compare compare notes on cities and campuses and in the long run, the selection of university university is a very personal thing. But it does seem to have some peer pressure along with it," Colville says. As far as colleges go, the most popular by far is our neighbour, Durham College. It has about 63 BHS grads enrolled in different different programs there at this time. Durham has just recently recently been awarded much more recognition as a high profile school. Durham College has introduced DUC - The Durham University Centre, and the concept has become a really really strong benefit for the college this year. The ultimate goal for the program is to enable students to get the university university theory and college practical experience on the same site. So far, everyone participating participating seems very positive positive about the changes.
