Held at LVIV Hall in Oshawa on November 18, the sell-out crowd congratulated the eight award winners and 18 nominees for their exemplary achievements at home, work and in the Durham community. "It's fantastic to have such a terrific turnout for this event," said Jill Walters, President of the Oshawa YWCA. "The support received from the community has been tremendous and is greatly appreciated." This year's winners were chosen for their accomplishments in the areas of social, educational, business, health, community and cultural contributions. contributions. From the 18 nominees the following were named Women of Distinction in recognition of their achievements: Young Woman of Distinction (awarded to recipients 18 years of age or younger), Devon Christie, Whitby; Business, Joanne Ferguson, Oshawa; Education, Training and Development, Margaret Greenley, Oshawa; Community Service, Carol Keyes, Whitby; Professions and Trades, Jennifer Morrison, Oshawa; Arts, Linda Paulocik, Whitby; Health, Lise Raymond, Ncstlcton; Recreation, Colkn Wingrove, Oshawa. Also attending as guest speaker was Barbara Underhill, world champion figure skater and spoi l commentator, whose moving address was a tribute to the human spirit and a message of courage and determination. Also presented at the dinner was the 1998 Ka\ Buffett Scholarship, which was awarded in Christine Lcmcry, a recent graduate of Brock High School in Cannington.
