The first of these is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1, 1998 in the Main Lobby of the Regional Headquarters Building, 605 Rossland Rd. E„ Whitby between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m. "The purpose of the Plan is to identify a future waste management system for the Region," says Peter Watson, Manager of Waste Management. "A plan is necessary because the major landfill site the Region is currently using is scheduled to close in the Fall of 2002. We want to make the public aware of our current system and invite their comments on the direction they think we should follow." The Public Information Centre will take, the form of an informal open house. There will be a series of poster boards on display for residents to view. Members of the Waste Advisory Committee will be available to answer questions and discuss waste issues. Get Your Home Ready for Winter This article is provided by local Realtors and the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) for the benefit of constances in the real estate market. If you want to make sure your home gets through another winter reasonably unscathed, now is the time to get the yard ready and your house bundled up. Unfortunately, getting your home ready for winter, here in Ontario, means more than just putting away the garden hose. As fall sets in and the leaves start to fall, begin with the grounds: • In addition to cleaning up the garden and picking up leaves, remove any dead branches that hang over electric electric and telephone lines to your home. You don't want them breaking off in a storm and cutting off power. • Reinforce newly planted trees with wooden stakes to protect them from strong winds. • Protect sensitive trees and shrubs from the cold by building sheds over them out of plywood or covering them with burlap. • Once all the leaves have fallen, clean debris from gutters, gutters, downspouts and drains and flush with water. • In frost-prone areas, shut-off the outdoor water supply, drain lines and leave valves open. • Patch and seal open cracks in the siding, trim and foundation of your home. Also, seal openings and close vents of unhealed crawl spaces. This will discourage four-legged house guests from seeking refuge. As the days get shorter and temperatures drop: • Clean and repair screens, doors and storm windows. Apply weatherstripping to avoid heat loss. Make sure you have cleaned all the windows windows wells, before installing storm windows. • Inspect the house roof and go into the attic to check for leaks. If you find any torn or loose shingles or loose metal flashing around the chimney, dormers, etc., have these repaired at once. • If you have a television antenna or satellite dish on the roof, ensure it is well- rein forced against high winds. • Store outdoor furniture inside or under a protective cover. Exposing it over a long winter only adds wear and tear. • Do not leave any liquids or other materials that can be damaged by freezing temperatures temperatures in unhealed areas such as a garage or tool shed. To be sure, check the labels on containers. containers. Latex paint, for example, example, can be ruined if allowed to freeze. • Holes and cracks in concrete concrete and blacktop drives and walkways should be patched using special sealers and materials available at hardware hardware and building-supply stores. • Get your snow blower or snow plow checked well before the first storm and don't forget to remove any gasoline from your power lawn mower. • If you will be storing wood outside for use in a fireplace fireplace or wood stove, ensure it is protected by some form of cover from rain and snow. • Review your insulation needs. Your home may benefit from additional insulation. In an unfinished attic, simply measure the thickness of existing insulation. If the attic is floored, you may have to pull up a floor board. If the attic is finished, drill a hole in the ceiling. • And, finally, inspect and. clean your chimney/fircplacc, especially if you use a fireplace fireplace or wood stove frequently frequently over the winter months. Properly maintained and used, a fireplace or wood stove can increase your home's overall heat efficiency. efficiency. / CUSTOMER SERVICE -t J 1st ■ PRIORITY ■^■llllllllllllllllllllll Broker ROYAL LePAGE tndepently Owned ■ . ■HHHillllllllllllilllllllll " ' ^ 1 John Fowler frank real estate | Sales Representative 234 King Street East, Bowmanville | BEAUTIFUL WATERFRONT COMMUNITY!
