Speed Skating Club Becomes a Reality Having gained official status status with the addition of the second ice pad at the Recreation Complex, the Clarington Speed Skating Club made the transition from a practice organization to a competitive one this past weekend. A total of 17 members travelled travelled to Kingston to compete in the Eastern Zone Regional Meet, and left a lasting impression with both their competitive spirit and results. "A lot of the people at the meet couldn't believe that this was the club's first competition because of how well we did," said one of the co- founders of the local club, Kalhlynn Hoch. She added that the gold, white and royal blue colours the club has adopted garnered a lot of attention. Three members of the club managed to finish in the top five of their respective divisions. Darryl Rowsel, 24, who also doubles.as a coach, finished first overall. He will be representing the club at a competition in London this weekend. At an earlier meet in Kitchener, he claimed a silver medal with a second place finish. Other skaters enjoying individual success included David Stewart, 17, who finished third, and Kaitlyn Bourdon, 8, who finished fourth overall. All of the skaters performed admirably in the first competitive meet for many of the members, said Hoch. The club is gaining momentum each week, as the membership numbers have now climbed to 34 in only its first season of operation. TEDDY BEAR TOSS -- The Oshawa Generals will be using a unique promotion for their December 13 home game against the Peterborough Petes. The 1st Annual Teddy Bear Toss Night asks fans attending the game to bring a new, or good used teddy bear or stuffed animal to the game. Immediately following following the Generals' first goal, fans will throw their teddy bear or stuffed animal onto the ice surface. All of the stuffed animals will be collected and distributed distributed to local charities. Just curious about what would happen if the Generals were to get shut out in the game? Letter to the Editor Reader Expects More Support For Jr. A Bowmanville Eagles Dear Sir Recently reading your newspaper's sports section, 1 came across the sports column written by Brad Kelly on the firing of yet another Bowmanville Eagles head coach. I must respond. As Brad should know, operating a sports franchise franchise is extremely time consuming and expensive. Like any sport, you need strong, positive, optimistic people totally surrounding the franchise. Sponsors, fan base, executive, coaches coaches and assistants, management, management, players, the township, township, and the local newspapers' newspapers' sports writer all have a part in the play. "It is through cooperation, cooperation, rather than conflict that your greatest success will.be derived." As for the head coach firing, Brad should know that you can't fire 25 players. players. Trade a few yes, but hopefully whatever the manager decides puts a charge into the team. Let's see what will become of the next OHL Mississauga head coach if Cherry doesn't like him, And he hand picked the first coach. Let me just add this little little known fact: If the junior hockey licence that is operating operating out of Clarington is folded or sold, there will be no more junior hockey Darlington Soccer Club's Competitive Program is now accepting COACHING APPLICATIONS for its 1999 season Application Deadline: December 15/98 For more information: Boys' Rep Girls' Rep Co-ordinator Co-ordinator Vince Bonazza lain Alexander 623-0692 623-1430 ÉÜkAi&AAâAâ in Bowmanville. As for Brad, maybe he should quit filling the sports column with stories about his family and get down to the Complex, get inside and talk directly to the coaches, players, and personnel just like he used to when the juniors were rated second or third overall overall and they couldn't get rid of him. Remember the bus rides, Brad? You owe the Eagles a little better then that. The Eagles will win. The Eagles will make, the playoffs. Let's hope the supporting cast, as I mentioned mentioned above, are all there to make it work the Bowmanville way...the winning way! Let's stay positive and keep that "Head Hunter" out of Clarington, for everyone's sake. C.R. Trimble Toys and More The past four games played by the Toros ended with the stats of 2-1-1.
