St. Stephen's News St. Stephen's Student Goes to Winter Games The Clarington/Courtiee Independent. Bowmanvillc. Saturday. December 5. 1998 Page 11 by D. Mosey One of our students, Sadie Rac Bulger is a sixteen sixteen year old student who is watching one of her dreams materialize. Not long ago a four day try out camp was held to select the best of the best from across Ontario to represent our province in the sport of ringette at the Canada Winter Games. Sadie, who has been playing ringette since she was seven helped lead the Gloucester Devils Junior "AA" team to a gold medal in last year's season. She is still actively involved with the team on top of a training schedule for the Winter Games that takes her across Ontario and to three other provinces. When the team had some free time they were able to tour parts of Edmonton and Saskatoon. Travelling to different cities has given Sadie a fresh perspective of our expansive country and a few memories that won't soon be forgotten! As a grade eleven student student at St. Stephen's Secondary School, Sadie feels the demands of keeping keeping up with school work and her ringette schedule. "It's pretty tough," she Confesses. Confesses. "I don't have much of a social life any more but it's fun, really fun. You get to make friends with the girls on the team." So what will Sadie be feeling as goalie for Team Ontario at the Winter Games? "It's kind of nerve racking," she laughs. "Knowing the whole country's country's going to be watching." Friends and family are proud of this young athlete's athlete's accomplishments and her community wishes her the best when she attends the Canada Winter Games this February in Corncrbrook, Newfoundland. On a musical note, St. Stephen's band was music to the cars of all those who attended the Santa Claus Parade last Saturday. 'Twenty-live students played such classics as Winter Wonderland and Frosty the Snowman. Lcannc Finlayson, a fifth year band member, says her favourite tune played at the parade is without à doubt 'Jingle Bell Jazz'. Having played in the parade the last four years, Ms. Finlayson describes it with a smile as "Good. Cold." By the end of the parade everyone was in the Christmas spirit and Ms. Harrison, St. Stephen's revered band instructor, knows just how to reward all the parade participants: a chocolate fondu party in the music room the following week. Yummy. Thanks to Price's Fruit Market and Roger Wright for the use of the truck and wagon. Toronto has proved to be a rewarding place as music students from grade 9-OAC recently had front row scats to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with conductor Boris Brott. The eighth annual scavenger scavenger hunt look place the second week in November and had music students stopping at 35 arts venues in the downtown core. A ten page assignment was completed, completed, prizes were awarded and dinner was eaten at Mr. Green Jeans to complete a very lucky and rewarding Friday the 13th. Looking ahead, all tuba, trombone and baritone players from all grade levels levels will be attending Tuba Tuba December 9th at Nathan Phillips Square. St. Stephen's will also be sending sending thirty students to sing alone with the brass ensemble. ensemble. It has been a fresh and exciting start this year at St. Stephen's Secondary School. However, some things such as the annual trip to Stratford Theatre carry on in their rich tradition. tradition. A bus load of eager students lead by the English department head, Mr. A. Balazo, arrived in Stratford on a beautiful fall afternoon to view two very different but equally intriguing plays. Students enjoyed a home-packed lunch on the scenic grounds of Stratford before being treated to Robert Bolt's thought provoking provoking A Man For All Seasons. Afterwards friends gathered at one of the downtown restaurants to enjoy supper and talk about the day. Back at the theatre students were treated to an energetic and colourful ensemble in Man of La Mancha. Finally, the bus ride home featured a lighthearted lighthearted movie and excited chatter. The theatrical extravaganza of Stratford had left quite an impression on those who attended. Reaching out as a school community also continues to be an essential aspect of life at St. Stephen's. Every religion class has one retreat per semester in which the students arc responsible for planning' and coordinating a day relevant relevant to the theme being focused on in the class. Fr. Pat Herlihcy explains a few of the themes as "the baptismal baptismal call to serve, the scriptural call to be vessels of the spirit and the person- Dollar$ & Sense with Deborah Kohlsmith Financial Consultant Is "foreign content" foreign to your RRSP? When I review investment portfolios most always "foreign content" is minimal or absent all together. Unfortunately this is not unusual as "reality is that relatively few individuals in Canada are aware of the implications of the restrictions and many hold no foreign properly content in their RRSPs". Source: C.I.F.P. Any property held in an RRSP lias to be one of the eligible types of investments either Canadian or Foreign. The Income Tax Act, Subsection 206(2) imposes a 20% maximum limit on foreign property content held within RRSPs. This restriction is based on a rationale to prevent significant flows of capital out of Canada. Canada makes tip less than .1% of the overall world market and "over tlie last twenty years, the return on the Canadian stock exchanges has been significantly lower than that of the stock exchanges in the United States and many other countries". Source: C.I.F.P. Why hold foreign property in an RRSP? The answer to this question is simple - risk and return. Advantages of holding foreign investments include: typically higher investment return, increased diversification and lower overall risks. Keep in mind the government imposes a penally of 1% per month on die value of excess foreign holdings in your investment portfolio, On the other hand, strategies do exist to exceed the 20% limit. Students have also participated participated in networking as big buddies to the Catholic elementary schools in the area and have reached out ' to those in need through their efforts for St. Vincent Dc Paul, The Ark Shelter and Strathavcn Nursing Home. A weekly liturgy in the chapel is coordinated by students with the help of Fr. Pal so that the expression of faith is a constant clement within the school. Father Pat is impressed with the students' and staff's desire to grow in the community but maintains that part of the purpose of a retreat is to celebrate relationships and have fun! Finally, a guest visitor had the students of Ms. Cole's grade I0 accounting class pondering over future career choices. Janet Batlcrsby had plenty of experience, direction and . advice to offer students. The graduate of Brescia College is now the treasurer for the Northern Ontario Township of Horncpayne. Ms. Battcrsby talked with students about relative job opportunities such as becoming a chartered management management accountant. She discussed the process of becoming an accountant and shared the experience of working in a senior management management position.
