Markus Lise, Chaplain at the WMHC, says the Spiritual and Religious Care (SPARC) department at the site was recently "cut back one full-time position by the Ministry of Health." "We now have 12 part time chaplains from across the Region" who share in the job of providing Spiritual and Religious Care for patients at WMHC. Paid on a fcc-for-service basis, the funding is split between WMHC and the community. But because of a lack of funds, part time chaplains chaplains arc receiving one payment from the institution, one payment from the funds raised in the community, and arc volunteering volunteering two sessions. Chaplains at WMHC provide one-on- one support, preach, perform ceremonies, and give Communion. The chaplains come from a variety of different religious affiliations, and SPARC is a part of the Ontario Multi-Faith Council on Spiritual and Religious Care, as well as the Durham Region Spiritual and Religious Resource Council. "We're working with the seriously mentally ill people," says Lise. To make a donation to help provide service, call SPARC at WMHC.
