"Most of us had minimal minimal sleep," admits Nicklc. "But we felt it was a window window of opportunity that would not be there in the future." Details of the contract were to be made public upon ratification of the deal. Teachers with the board withdrew voluntary services, services, such as coaching and advisory roles, when school resumed in September to protest new teaching time requirements, requirements, set out in Bill 160, the province's Education Improvement Act. The Act calls for high school teachers teachers to be in the classroom for 25 extra minutes each day. Most boards had translated that into an extra class per day, meaning some teachers were teach ing four out of four classes daily. Should the contract be ratified, Nicklc says teachers teachers will make an individual choice about providing time on a voluntary basis. "Individual teachers will have to evaluate their commitments to extra- and co-curricular activities," says Nicklc. "It's up to each' individual teacher. Some may choose to volunteer." volunteer." Armstrong says she hopes the agreement will mean an end to what has been, so far, a less-than- plcasant school year. "I know that there has been a great deal of unhappiness unhappiness and unrest in the system. We need the opportunity to get going in a very positive way," she says. Durham Briefs Help for Homeless The Durham Region has been allocated $120,000 per year in each of the next two years to help solve the problem of homelessness in the region. The money is the result of work by a task force that looked into the issue of homelessness across the province. "There is a problem across this province and across this country," observed Oshawa Mayor Nancy Diamond at a meeting meeting of Durham's regional council Wednesday. She said, because of the services services available in Oshawa, people in economic difficulty difficulty congregate in the city. However, she observed that the problem exists throughout Durham. Councillor Larry O'Connor, chair of Durham's health and social services committee, said some proposals have already been brought forward forward to help the homeless. A resolution passed by regional council on Wednesday states that Durham will research the issue in consultation with community groups and work to establish services that will prevent homelessness. homelessness. Police Get New Communications Debenture financing of almost $7.7 million was approved by Durham's regional council on Wednesday to equip the regional police with a new voice and data radio system. system. The money will replace a system that was originally originally installed in 1976 and was described by a police spokesman at Wednesday's council meeting as "virtually on its last legs." Transit Review Receives $18,000 The Durham Region lias agreed to contribute an additional $18,000 towards reviewing transit services in the Highway 401/Highway Two corridor. corridor. The money will be used to expand the scope of work by a consultant, including a series of workshops workshops and meetings. The Municipality of Clarington will contribute $1,400 towards the cost. The study will help produce a "preferred services services strategy." THE SPINAL COLUMN When was the last time you actually thought about your posture? After you read the spinal column this week 1 guarantee that the next time you look in the mirror you'll be thinking about posture. Posture is an indication of how healthy (or unhealthy) your spine is. Researchers who study people say that over 90% of North Americans have poor posture. Posture shows us a picture of how the spine may be positioned. The spine is the central frame from which the body gets its structure. If the posture is poor the spine is out of its normal alignment. When this happens the spine presses on the sensitive nerves travelling through the spinal column and out to the rest of the body. The purpose of chiropractic is to correct nerve interference. Nerve interference promotes sickness and disease. It robs our vitality and weakens our immune system. The spinal column consists of twenty-four small bones called vertebrae. Seven of these are located in the neck. Twelve are found in the mid-back and five are in the lower back. The vertebrae stack one on top of the other, and when you look at them from front to back, they form a straight line, just like with good posture. If the spine is curved to the right or to the left it is often reflected in posture. Someone may have one shoulder that is higher than the other. If the spine is rotated, causing nerve interference, it is very difficult to see the posture problem unless you are skilled in properly checking posture. All chiropractors are highly skilled in checking posture. Most chiropractic offices will perform a postural check for you as; a public service, but contact their office to be sure. Chiropractors call nerve interference vertebral subluxation. When the vertebrae are misaligned (subluxated), the flow of messages from the brain to all the other cells in the body is distorted. Not only does this have an adverse affect on health, but because it distorts your perception of the world ; and compromises your ability to respond to the world, it can lead to psycho-emotional problems as well; when this happens to a significant number of people in a society it has a detrimental affect on the society as a whole. This misalignment of the vertebrae can often exist undetected and slowly undermine ones health. With this information you now can see the importance of good posture. Improving posture is just one of the many benefits a chiropractic lifestyle brings.
