Funeral was held Thursday, December 3. Sympathy also to friends and family of the late Mrs. Grace Cochrane, a long time Orono resident, later years in Strathavcn Lifecare Centre. She passed away Thursday, December 3. Buriel from Northcult- Elliott Funeral Home. The Challice families enjoyed Sunday, November 29 at Chemong Lodge, Peterborough for a dinner party to honor Mr and Mrs. John Killeen in their 40th wedding anniversary and also John's 70th birthday. Their Bowmanville friends send congratulations. Friends were present from Ottawa, Oshawa, Toronto, Peterborough. John and Margaret were longtime residents residents of Bowmanville and now live on Selwyn Rd. Lakefield. A good crowd attended the Heather Rebekah Bazaar on Saturday, December 5 and an attractive display at the baking tables, the craft tables and always the candy and sweets display. A large selection at the "penny sale" table and the big winners are Quilt - Nancy Graham, Bowmanville, Sheet set - Barbara Simpson, Bailieboro, pretty doll - Mary Thompson, Newcastle. Congratulations to all! U.C.W. News Unit #3 of Orono United gathered at the home of Mrs. Margaret Gunter for our usual Christmas party, Tuesday, December 1. A delicious pot luck dinner held in recreation room downstairs, and all beautifully beautifully decorated for season! We were thrilled to have former member, Mrs. Eileen Billings, with us from Strath Manor as guest. She brought greetings to all and expressed how happy she was to be again with us. Merry Christmas to all. Orono Horticulture Meeting The latest meeting was held in the church, Thursday, December 3, with a large crowd for the delicious delicious pot luck dinner. Tables looked pretty with baskets of red apples and sprigs of green. President Carol Mostert welcomed everyone and Reverend Mcrvyn Russell gave the blessing. Head table guests, Reverend and Mrs. Russell, Mrs. Mary Novak, representing representing Clarington Council, Mr. Ken Love, District director; Mr. and Mrs. Kathleen Petrie, 2nd Vice O.H.A.; Mr and Mrs. Mostert Pres.; Lorna Atkins Sec.; Mrs. Flo Sharpe, Treasurer. Ontario Horticulture Association Society Presidents Award went to Isabelle Challice, long time member of 40 years and service in many areas. Mary Novak brought greetings from the Mayors office and congratulated the society for keeping our village village beautiful. Kathleen Petrie 2nd O.H.A. Pres, brought greetings and messages messages from the parent organization! organization! Mr. Ken Love brought welcome from district district 1 of which there are 12 societies. Orono will be host society next April for district district 17 Convention. Lucky draws were held and the president invited folks to help themselves to apples and again thanked everyone. Our music guests were introduced by Isabelle. Our special entertainment consisted consisted of our very own youthful young folks choir under the direction of organist Mary Clare McKinnon, and leader, Mrs. Donna Morrison. They have talent galore and arc really excellent. The next entertainers, "The Douglas Dance Group", also offered an excellent display of talent, featuring different ages and different dances. The Orono Sunday School is decorating an outside Christmas Tree and need help to change the bulbs from clear to coloured. The bulbs, can be in memory of or dedicated to family and friends. Sunday, December 13, White Gift Service at Kirby 9:30 a.m. White Gift Service and Christmas Pageant at Orono 11 a.m. Lunch follows the Orono Service and the congregation congregation is asked to bring square/cookies etc. Our White Gift donations donations are going to the Salvation Army in Bowmanville. This year they have requested donations donations of stuffing mix, cranberry cranberry sauce, foods to complete complete a turkey dinner, and treats for the children. They also need gifts suitable for 7-10 years of age and mitts and gloves for teenagers. Sunday evening, December 13, Black Light Christmas Puppet Show "Angels Aware". Once again the story of the Mitten' Tree will be told on Sunday, December 13 and donations of hats, mitts, and socks will be taken during the Advent season. Gift Baskets. Wc will be packing gift baskets on Sunday, December 20 for our shut-in friends. If you know of someone who would appreciate receiving a basket please let Isabel or Marlene know. Donations of fruit, candies, home baking, etc. would be appreciated as well as small, wooden orange boxes. Horticulture Society Winners Many beautiful entries were displayed at the Orono Horticultural Society's annual Christmas Show held last week, and prizes were awarded for all categories. Some of the prize recipients were Trudy Douma (right) who won for "Most Points for a New Member" and Shelley Etmanskie (centre) who won for "Most Points in Show" and "Judge's Choice."
