So, what happens to the money the municipality municipality has set aside for clearing clearing and salting the roads? That's exactly the question question Councillor John Mutton asked public works staff Monday when he asked for a report on how much money is in reserve. "We're sitting with a surplus in the snow clearing clearing and salt and sand budget," he said. "I would like to know where we can direct some of that money. We arc in two very unique years and I imagine that you sit with quite a bit of money right now." Director of Public Works, Stephen Yokes, said the department does not have the money in hand. Instead, the money • •••••••••••• • • • • • ■ goes back into the munici- . pality's general revenues. ! "We base our budget ' for snow clearing on a five-year average, so some years we go over budget and some years stay I under," he explained. : "When any department ; shows a surplus, it goes ; into the general account." ■ Councillor Mutton would like to see the money stay in the Public Works Department and be applied to other projects, but Mayor Diane Hamrc strongly disagreed. "The surplus goes into the general account and that's what reduces the tax levy next time. It's all very well financially thought out," she said. "Besides, it's too soon to do. This winter hasn't hit yet. A bad storm can hit any time." "The weather is great and we're all enjoying it, but don't count your chickens before they hatch. Just be patient," she told Councillor Mutton. Bowmanvillc KidFit Centre 83 Mearns Court South off Baseline, east of Liberty St. R.I.D.E.
