Shoofly Pie and Boiled Peanuts Planning a trip to the sunny south? Make sure you try some of the local tucker. What follows are not indigenous delicacies but it's what the locals consume. So if you want to go native give them a try. While driving through South Carolina, I noticed what looked like small vegetable stands on the side of the road trying to hawk "boiled peanuts". I made up my mind to investigate this odd sounding sounding product, so stopping for gas at a combination gas station variety store I asked the clerk, "What are boiled peanuts?" The lady with the teenage son standing in line behind me couldn't resist. "Did you hear that?" she laughed with a thick southern drawl. "You don't know what boiled peanuts are? Where are you from?" I joined in the fun and told her I was from Canada and had never heard of boiled peanuts before. She gushed with pride explaining that boiled peanuts were a popular popular snack in the southern states and I wouldn't regret buying some. Boy, was she wrong! Boiled peanuts are just that, peanuts in the shell stuck in boiling water and then cooked until they are mush. They are served in a plastic bag. You crack open the shell and water pours out. The nut itself has the consistency of canned peas. A travelling companion commented that boiled peanuts must be a gag that southeners try to pull on tourists in a money making making scheme. So why should you try them? The next time you are at a social gathering imagine the attention you'll receive when you mention, "You won't believe what I tried on my last trip..." If it is a sweet tooth you like to satisfy, then don't miss a chance to have a slice of shoofly pie. The slice is small, but its sweetness will have your mouth puckering. Shoofly pie is a sugar pie, period. That's it, a sugar filling in a pic crust. If you can cat more than one slice it is time to have some blood work done. (Quebec has a similar fix for sweet addicts. It is a sugar cone where a sugar goo is poured into an ice cream cone for those brave enough to try), One southern food that has an undeserved bad reputation is grits. Perhaps it is just the sound of the word as it rolls off the tongue, grits. The corn- meal can be eaten in a number of different ways. I prefer to cat it with sugar and milk like a cereal. In fact, Quaker makes an instant grits cereal where you just add boiling water (only available in the south). Butter along with salt and pepper make it a good side dish for dinner. Try it, you'll like it, Fast food restaurants may look similar to ours but there are a lew differences differences you might want to note. First, if you go to The Traveller by Rob Evans KFC in the south you get mashed potatoes instead of fries with your chicken. That's fine, it just makes it harder to eat when you arc driving with the box of take-out on your lap. Look for an item called "hushpuppies". These are deep fried cornmeal balls. Almost tasteless they become a fine medium for increasing your ketchup intake. Biscuits are truly one of the great benefits of travelling travelling through the south. They can be ordered in combination with a meal or on their own from, almost every fast food restaurant. Similar to our tea biscuits, they arc served warm and taste great buttered and topped with your favourite jam or jelly. Probably the biggest mistake most Canadians make while ordering in a southern restaurant is asking asking for an iced tea. Southern iced tea is hot tea that is just taken and chilled. You can stir sugar into it or ask if it is already sweetened, that means it will taste more like the iced tea you arc familiar with. Finally, here's a few tips on how to speak the language (it's still English isn't it?). A pop is a soda, a serviette is a paper napkin and in some places, vine-" gar is for cleaning windows, windows, not for consumption. consumption. Bon appétit and happy travels. Also, don't forget you can still enter to win a weekend for two in Niagara Falls.
