Mrs. Lorcnza MacArthur, long time resident with her late husband who was the village village doctor, and recently a resident of Peterborough Nursing Home passed away last week. Sympathy is extended to her family, Jessie and Norm Dysarl of Peterborough, Belly MacArthur and Ardis MacArthur both of Toronto and her three grandsons. The funeral was held last Friday. On Saturday evening Tom Horton passed away after a lengthy illness. His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at Wagg's Funeral Chapel. Sympathy is extended to Marg, his wife of over fifty years, his two daughters Joan (Mrs. Ralph Swain) and Jean, and sons Wayne, Dave, Bob, Brian and Lcnnic. On Friday evening, the Christmas Variety Night presented by "A Touch of Country',' and their guests was a great success. The guests who assisted with the programme were Bunty Webb, Dave Wotten, Highland dancers - Megan Foote and Jennifer Graham, Herb Vine and the Pigeon Creek Trio - Jean McMahon, Ruth Jennings and Perry Grandcl. Another delightful evening of Christmas music was the community carol sing held at the United Church on Sunday evening. Participating in the program were the High School Junior Concert Band under the direction of John Beirness, the senior senior choir of the St. John's Anglican Church and the Blackstock United as well as much congregational carol singing. The evening concluded with refresh- -ments and a social time. When you are planning your Christmas holiday activities please include thoughts of the Snowflake Curling Bonspiel which, will be held at the local arena on Tuesday, December 29 during the day. This bonspiel is geared for families of all ages, for some fun and activity together following too much feasting of Christmas. If you arc a local Senior and arc able to attend please R.S.V.P. to the High School at 986- 4241 as soon as possible, The name of the late Roy McLaughlin of Nestlcton has been inducted inducted into the Ontario Horseshoe Hall of Fame. Roy earned this award when he played in the A class in the Canadian Men's Championship at the C.N.E. in the 1970's. Roy was one of fourteen fourteen added at an Induction Service on Sunday, November 8 at the Horseshoe Hall of Fame, the Khaki Club, Wellcsly, Ontario. Edith has received a beautiful plaque that reads - "Roy McLaughlin Inducted into Ontario Horseshoe Hall of Fame, 1998". Isn't it such a shame that so many of these very deserving honours are left to be presented until the recipient is no longer here to appreciate it? What a proud time for Edith and their family. The annual Cartwright High School Christmas Concert will be held the evening of ■ Tuesday, December 15 at the CCPS. St. John's Anglican News Sunday, December 6th, 1998, was a big day for Bcrnic and Gloria' Smuck as they watched Father Hugh baptize their grandchild, grandchild, Mykala ' Christel Tafcrtshofer, during the Sunday morning Eucharist at St. John's. Mykala is the daughter of Kim and Martin Tafcrtshofer. A large congregation, which included many family members and friends, welcomed welcomed little Mykala into the church. During the same Sunday morning service, the Coles family, Debra and Tom with children, Kimberly, Benjamin and Joshua, celebrated the 2nd Sunday of Advent as they lit the Peace Candle. Kimberly was chosen to light the candle, the other family members read the prayers, Then the children joined the rest of the church school choir as they sang a children's Advent hymn. Don't forget that the Children of St. John's Church School will present present their annual Christmas Pageant during the morning morning church service next Sunday, December 13th. Following the service there will be a Pot Luck Lunch in the Parish Hall. Once again, the dessert will be provided by the teachers of the Church School and those teachers do not seem to have much regard for the principles of weight-watching. Residential Construction Increases in October Housing starts rose 3.6 per cent in October to a seasonally seasonally adjusted annual rate of 139,600* units compared to 134,700 units in September, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). In urban centres, single starts were up slightly to 69,700 units from 67,500. Multiple starts rose to 48,700 units from 47,500 the previous previous month. "Overall, home-building maintained pace in October, with Toronto and the Prairie region the most active," said . Louis Trolticr, Economist at CMHC's Market Analysis Centre. "Most market indicators indicators point to moderate growtli in residential construction activity over the next months as low mortgage rales continue continue to offset the negative impact of slower economic growth." Residential construction in Onlario was up 11.3 per cent to 53,400 units from 48,000 the previous month. Toronto posted a 23.9 per cent increase in single- detached starts and a 13.1 per cent rise in multiples. Handbell Choir Plays Saturday The "Bells of Bowmanvillc" handbell choir will be performing Saturday, December 12th, at 11 a,m. at the Bowmanvillc Seventh Day Adventist Church. Everyone is invited to attend this free Christmas program. The handbell choir consists consists of 10 to 12 performers. They were among the musicians musicians featured at the downtown downtown Bowmanvillc tree- lighting ceremony on December 4. Sounds of the Season The General Motors choir entertained employees and retirees at General Motors of Canada Headquarters in Oshawa last week with a Christmas Mini-Gift of Music. The choir performed a number of Christmas songs, and even invited the audience to join in on the more traditional carols.
