The Claringlon/Courticc Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, December 12, 1998 Page 4 Mackie's Automotive Toros Compete at Silver Stick Mackie's first match of the 1998 Silver Stick Regional Tournament pitted the Toros against the Markham Waxcrs. The line of Kyle Goodchild from Milch McMichael and Chris Marchant was the first to find the net. Each time Clarington pulled ahead Markham would scratch back. This see saw battle continued into the third. With the score 3-2 in favour of Clarington and three minutes remaining on the clock, the Toros were called for a penalty. With the Toros a man short Markham pulled their goalie to create a 2-man advantage. As Chad Dcighton shut the door between the pipes, Mackie's Automotive kept the assault to the outside. During one of Markham's attacks Tim Lew grabbed control of the loose puck and rifled a shot into the Markham empty net. The final score was Toros 4, Markham 2. Continuing his fine play was Cory Prince who netted the second Toro marker from Nick Bonin and Brian Allorc. The third score went to Haley Vanscggclcn. Haley picked the puck up in the slot after David Ross drilled a shot off of the Markham goalie's faccmask. Tim Lew who's been strong on the point also drew an assist on the play. Mackic Automotive's second match was against their cross-town league rivals from Aurora. This game proved to be another close checking affair with the Toro's besting Aurora by a score of 3-2. Scoring for the Toros were Kyle Goodchild, Cory Prince and David Ross. David also picked up an assist as did Haley Vanscggclcn, Chris Jukic, and Adam Dcrks. Mike Schridcr was solid in net for the win. Next up for the Toros in divisional play were the hometown hometown Whitby Wildcats. This would represent the fifth meeting between these teams this year with the Toros winning all previous matches. On this day it would appear that the Wildcats approach would be a physical one. The bodies were flying. However, it was still not to be for the Wildcats. Mackie's were equal to the task and with Chad Deighlon blocking the net held off Whitby for a 4-2 win. Point getters for the Toros were Chris Marchant with a goal and two assists. Mitch McMichael who stepped up his play chipped in with a goal and an assist. Kyle Goodchild continued to find the net and counted a goal and an assist. The final marker went to Chris Jukic, who's starting to use his "howitzer" to find the net. Mackie's Automotive finished round robin divisional play with a record of 3-0. This set up a meeting on Saturday night with the runner-up winner of Division B, the Slreetsville Tigers. Both the Strcctsville goalie and the Toro's Mike Schridcr were pumped and it showed. Unfortunately, some sloppy play in the Toro end resulted resulted in Strcctsville getting on the board first. The game remained 1-0 until midway through the second period. During a goalmouth scramble, Chris Marchant calmly kicked the puck onto Mitch McMichael's stick. Mitch slammed the puck into the open net to tie the game at 1 - 1. Each team continued to trade opportunities with both goalies stealing the show. Midway through the third an attempt by the Toros to keep the puck, in order to sustain pressure resulted in a 2 on 1 break and Strcetsvillc's second second goal of the game. The Toros pressed until time ran out but were continually turned back by Streetsville's solid defense. The fans would like to thank the Toros for their fine showing and representation of the Clarington Community during this prestigious tournament. THE SPINAL COLUMN What is the most important health related question you can ask? For many, it's "what type of medication do 1 need to relieve my headaches!" or "who do 1 need to see to fix my ulcers?" Others, who are aware of the potential side effects of today's medications ask, "what herb should 1 take for my arthritis?" or "what type of alternative care can best fix my allergies!" The real question that we need to be asking is "what can 1 do to make my body healthy enough so that I don't suffer from headaches, ulcers, arthritis or allergies". This is the shift in thinking that will be necessary to create a healthier world. Fortunately this trend is beginning to make an impact. The May 20, 1998 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association published a research paper entitled "Why Patients Use Alternative Medicine". It became clear after reading this article that the general population is quickly moving towards alternative channels of health sources. The article concludes that "the majority of alternative medicine users appear to be doing so, largely because they find these health care alternatives to be more congruent with their own values, beliefs and philosophical orientations toward health and life." This search for optimal health demands an understanding about what that means. A lot of people think that health means not having a specific disease or symptoms. If you don't happen to be in bed with the flu or struggling with a bout of indigestion, does that mean you're healthy? The most important thing to realize is that health is more than just that period between illnesses, or the absence of symptoms. Health can only be judged by the way your body adapts to the physical and emotional changes in the environment. For example, if a healthy body is exposed to a flu bug, it should be able, if it's working right, to neutralize the effects of the virus. What happens when the normal function of the body breaks down and you get sick! When we rely on drugs, even natural drugs, we are attempting to do the body's job for it. In fact, relying on drugs to treat ailments can actually hinder the body's own unique abilities to fight disease. There are very few health care approaches that are specifically geared to helping the body achieve its own level of health. Chiropractic actually has that as its sole purpose. Chiropractors aren't trying to eliminate symptoms and they definitely don't introduce anything foreign into the body. They work on the premise that the body's own inner wisdom is always trying to create a healthier state on its own. So, the major health question we have to ask is not which pill to take, it's whether we want to create wellness or treat illness, Focus on getting your body truly healthy, through diet, exercise and chiropractic, and it will do all the treating and curing that's possible. The Harrison Fuels Minor Peewce Toros hopes of winning the Silver Stick Regional Tournament were dashed by a determined determined Belleville squad on Saturday, November 27. A gritty effort was turned in by all our players but they were unable to beat a hot goalie in the l-0 overtime loss. In game one the boys worked hard but were unable to get any breaks, dropping a 7-l decision to Richmond Hill. Nothing less than two wins in their final round robin games would do if they hoped to advance to the quarterfinals. quarterfinals. In game two the Toros found the back of the net six times. Ryan Fowler with four goals and Kyle Brown with two led the way to a 6-0 route of Ajax. Justin Andrews was awesome awesome in goal picking up the shutout.
