Checking in with Ontario Street P.S. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, December 16, 1998 Page 11 by Monique White First, wc would like to ; say welcome to four new ■ teachers who have joined ! us this year. The first is ; Mrs. J. Romanchuk. She is new to our school and ;■ teaches grade 8 alongside ■ ' Mr. Marchand. The second > is Mrs. M. Warren-Grybas. i She's the librarian, the Vice Principal and she };; helps teach senior kindcr- garten. She was here as a > teacher, but she left about ! 4 years ago and I suppose : she missed us so much that I' when she heard our former J: V.P., Mme. Kneen, was v going away, she just had to v come back. Wc all hope Î. that Mme. Kneen is happy working at her new school. r The third new teacher is j Ms. J. Smith. She teaches \ grades 4 and 5 alongside l Mine. Liautaud and Mme. ; Chittick. Last but riot least is Ms. K. Santos who •; leaches S.K. i Now, we'd like acknowledge our crossing guard, Marjorie Bate. She started after Christmas in the year 1981, almost 18 years ago! She started at this school the same year Mme. Warren Grybas (then called Mile. Warren) started. As a child, she came to this school as a student. Back then, the school was all English. After she started as our crossing guard, the school switched to French and English, then switched again to just French. When asked when she had been busiest, her response was a very simple. "It was definitely definitely busiest when the school had English kids coming in." In other news, our Christmas concert is coming coming up on December 16th. There arc 8 classes participating participating this year and most of them arc keeping their performances secret. Admission is free and it takes • place at Bowmanville High School from approximately 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Also, congratulations Renee Brunton and Reid Morrison for their wins in the Lions Club Peace Poster Contest. Renee got 1st place and Reid got an honourable mention. We'd like to congratulate all of the grade six students in Miss Stock's and Mrs. Chittick's classes who participated, participated, as well. O Christmas Tree... Bradscot Construction, builders of the new St. Stephen's Secondary School, have donated a tree for the school's first Christmas. The student council donated $100 that would have been spent on buying and decorating the tree to the St. Vincent dc Paul Society. The money will be used to help local families this Christmas. Pictured are: Ken Rowe, Elizabeth Courncyca and Pat Rowe, of St. Vincent de Paul; school custodian Margaret Kavanagh; Bill O'Reilly, of Bradscot Construction and Danielle Mosscy, Student Council President at St. Stephen's. Accountability Program at Community Colleges Update from M.J. Hobbs 5;. M " 2-' ry Happy Days arc near!! J Only 10 days left till •• Christmas...3 till Winter Break!! Yes!! Have wc been a hap- , penin' place or what? Our , first report card of the year came out the 2nd of December. The term's - reports were a new chal- lenge to staff and students -• alike-both rose to meet the ; challenge successfully. Our Community Connections Club also experienced success in the 37th Bowmanville Santa Claus Parade. The "Letters to Santa" float received the »- Best Junior Float trophy. £ Way to go CCC! ! ! Supportive volunteers continue to be a magical part of our system. ' Between hot lunches, ; tutoring and support activ- *; ities, we at M. J. Hobbs are a force to be reckoned with. We'd like to apply . such energy towards another worthy cause - - Magic Bears! The Lakeridge Health Oshawa would appreciate a donation donation of any stuffed bear or animal, small to medium in size. Even though the weather hasn't caused a ... panic need of warmth - a . child's heart could use the v extra comfort and security of a warm and fuzzy stuffed toy. We'd gladly r accept any such donation! ~ Along these lines, we all need to remember the Salvation Army and their drive to collect food items as well as our personal S £ drive to collect any of your a old, warm coats. Donating £ them will clean out your jv. closets as well as helping keep the kid warm. Without Cathy £$*', Ferguson (thanks Mom), ibjrt- yet another supportive vol- untecr, our inter-school |y\ volleyball teams would not be down to the wire in Ul: the midst of competitions. <-y Our final game is ** approaching. Results will be posted in January. ;% Our Winter Concert with the 7 and 8 bands and choir was held Monday, £ December 7th. The grade ' - 7 jazz band had their first j public appearance. This catches us up since last month's column. Till January, keep behavin'... Santa is watching and so are the teachers. Our Christmas Dance is the 17th. Happy holidays! Ontario's 25 colleges of applied arts and technology have launched a massive accountability program that will require the participation of employers and college graduates across the province. The Key Performance Indicators (KPI) project will use information collected from large surveys of employers of college college graduates, and the grads themselves, as a method of measuring employer satisfaction, satisfaction, graduate satisfaction and graduate graduate employment. The project is being undertaken in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training. "In order to be effective, the colleges require the involvement of the many thousands thousands of employers of college graduates", says Dr. Bill Gordon of the KPI Implementation team. "We arc asking for their help by participating in an upcoming survey." The employer survey, which will be conducted over the phone in January, will take about 20 minutes. The KPI initiative will also soon begin surveying current students. They will be asked questions regarding their satisfaction satisfaction with college programs. A portion of provincial government funding will be tied to an individual college's performance performance in relation to KPI results. Employers of graduates of any of the province's 25 colleges of applied arts and technology may learn more by contacting their local college. Sr, I Can't Face the Holidays!" "By John Kennedy Say nor" "I can't face the holidays" is something I am beginning to hear from bereaved people as the holiday season approaches. During the coming weeks the music and decorations will be a painful reminder of Christmas without a loved one. What can you expect during this difficult time? You may be anticipating the worst. The anticipation of Christmas is worse than the day itself. The day will come and go, and you will get through it. You may wish to avoid the whole season by going away or sleeping through it! You may feel under a great deal of pressure to "get into the spirit." You may also feel guilty if you go out and have a good time! In addition, you may experience some of what you knew closer to the time of the death: anger, loneliness, sadness, depression. SUGGESTIONS FOR COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS 1. Bring your loved one into the Christmas celebration. Light a special candle in your home in memory of your loved one. 2. Eliminate the pressures as much as possible. Only do what you want to and what you are able to do. 3. Evaluate family traditions. It is helpful to have a discussion with other family members about what traditions you want to keep and what you would change. 4. If baking and other food preparations are a chore, then save your energy for other things and buy the food rather than spending time in preparation. 5. Since this is an emotionally and physically draining time, get lots of rest. 6. Buy a gift in memory of your loved one and give it to a needy person. 7. Invite someone who is alone to share part of Christmas Day with you. 8. There is never a good time to suppress your emotions. Don't do it now! 9. Rather than placing all the emphasis on Christmas Day, try to celebrate the season. Remember, the message of Christmas is one of hope. Every day you live, every event such as Christmas you observe, moves you further down the road to recovery. Live in hope that the future will be brighter and some day you will enjoy Christmas again.
