Sports $ Soccer League Grows The Darlington Soccer Club's indoor league has enjoyed tremendous growth since starting three years ago. This season, there arc 300 children children between the ages of 5-15 playing. The program program runs from 8-5 p.m. at BUS on weekends, as well as four hours at Courticc Secondary School. Unbeaten Streak Hits 35 Games Much was made of the defeat the Denver Broncos suffered this past Sunday to the New York Giants, ending their 18-gamc winning streak, and preventing them from enjoying the first perfect season season since the 1972 Miami Dolphins. A little closer to home, away from the pomp and pageantry of the NFL, an incredible string of victories has been amassed by a group of seven and cighl-ycar-old hockey players. Their record certainly has raised a few eyebrows. eyebrows. The Halmincn Homes Minor Novice 'AA' Toros collected a pair of victories this past week, raising their unbeaten streak to an amazing 35 games without a loss. During the string that dates back to the start of the season, the Toros have won 34 games and tied one. The only blemish - if you can call it that - on their record is a tic against Vaughan. Included during the streak are three tournament championships collected in Stouffville, Burlington, and their own Clarington tourney. Their big test will come over the Christmas holidays when the Toros enter a 'AAA' tournament in Oakville, says the team's manager, Lisa Higgins. Noting that the hockey club has a well-balanced attack, Higgins said that because the players are at such a young age, they don't realize the magnitude of the streak they have built. "I don't think they really understand," she said of the innocence of the young players. "They realize that they arc undefeated, but they don't walk around thinking thinking that they can't be beat." How refreshing. A group of athletes enjoying a winning streak -- without large egos and trash-talking as part of the repertoire. DOING JUST FINE -- There seems to be some sensitivity surrounding the subject of Bowmanville Eagles coaches this season, so this week I'll go in a different direction and share a story about a former coach of the hockey club. I know, I know. Everyone is snickering and thinking thinking "Well, that doesn't really narrow it down." Remember Kevin McClelland? In addition to winning winning four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers as a player, McClelland spent a brief time as an Eagles' coach a couple of years ago for the final dozen games of the regular season and the playoffs. Since then, he has spent time as an assistant coach with the Barrie Colts, and prior to the start of this season, season, landed the head coaching job with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League. His club was in action as the junior hockey game of the week on Sportsnet on Sunday night, and looked impressive in a 5-2 win over Kelowna. The former Courticc resident has Prince Albert in first place in the East Division, six points ahead of the second place team from Swift Current. Though McClelland insisted he had no aspirations to coach in the NHL while he was spending time with the Eagles, it's inevitable that some day lie will return to the NHL in some type of coaching capacity. ONE THAT WORKED - The Teddy Bear Toss promotion that the Oshawa Generals used on Sunday night was a huge success, as the ice was littered with stuffed animals that fans had thrown onto the ice following following Oshawa's first goal. Quipped one staffer -- "It's a good thing for the players that the fans weren't asked to bring a non-perishable non-perishable food item to the game instead." It would be a little dangerous to hold that promotion, promotion, don't you think? MUST BE CHRISTMAS -- It's been a week since I've received any hate mail, or have been berated berated on the phone. Apparently, there won't be any need for me to enrol in the witness protection program. Laing, McHardy and Rohr Midget Toros Earn Victory On Monday, November 23, the Midget Toros returned to league action with a vengence as they look on Barrie. The Toros came out on lire and built a 3-0 lead by the midway point of the second period. A four minute lapse cost the Toros their comfortable lead as the Barrie team scored two tpiick goals before the end of the second to get hack into the game. The Toros regrouped between periods and came out for the third determined to win. They added two more in the third including an empty net goal to earn a well deserved 5-2 victory. Leading the Toros was Nick Smith with 2 goals and 2 assists. Mike Cyr added a goal and 2 assists, Chris Lalon 2 assists, Jeff Ross 2 assists, Matt Stout I goal, Ryan McKnight I assist, and Kyle Welsh's empty nelter rounded out the scoring. The next night the Toros visited Pickering and came away with a 4-1 win. The Midget Toros surrendered a first period marker and fell behind 1-0, but that was it as nelminder Roll Kamcka shut the door the rest of the way, The Toros got on the hoard twice in the middle stanza to lake a 2-1 lead that they would not rclim|iiish. The Clarington squad added two more in the third to make the final 4-1 Toros. Mike Cyr led the Toro attack with 2 goals and lincmate Nick Smith added a goal and an assist. Matt Stout had the other Toro marker and Mike Harper chipped in with 2 assists. The rollercoaster month of November ended for the Toros on Monday, November 30, in Belleville. The Toros, trying to even their record for the season after a tough month, found themselves playing against the clock as well as the home team. Belleville scored in the first period and took a 1-0 lead into the second. The Toros evened the contest in the second second period and were about to enter the third in a 1-1 tie. The teams were ordered off the ice for a flood despite the fact that there was not much lime left before curfew. The teams returned for the third and after only a minute and thirty seconds were buzzed off the ice because of curfew. Since the game was deadlocked deadlocked at 1-1 the Toros did not gel a chance to even their record and will take a 7-8-3 season record into December. The lone Toro goal was scored by Darren Kok on a deflection of a Blake Ay Is worth shot.
