Worden School. The book, entitled Fast Finish, follows the progress of a talented distance distance runner as he develops develops his skills and pursues an Ontario championship. Given the fact that Bill Swan has been a distance runner himself for the past 30 years and has spent an equal amount of time teaching journalism and writing, it's not surprising that he'd combine his two interests in a novel like this one. But, local readers may be surprised to find their own community playing a supporting role in this story. The Courtice Recreation Complex with its spiral water slide and a "mountain" that challenges challenges runners on Trull's Rd. arc just a few local touches you'll find in this 25,000-word novel aimed at readers between eight and 13. It also features a fictitious fictitious track club called the Clarington Vikings and is dedicated to teacher Gerry Dcanike, and all of the runners in the S.T. Worden 40-kilomctrc club. Swan's daughter, a grade eight student student at. S.T. Worden, is among those runners. Fast Finish is the story of a young boy who likes to run. He also spoke about the writing process behind the completed volume. "When I was writing every day, it took me about a month to write one draft," lie recalled. And, although the publisher liked the story, it went through two more drafts before it was ready for detailed scrutiny by a copy editor. When the manuscript was read by the copy edi tor, it was returned with 120 small yellow post-it notes that questioned various various details in the novel. All of this occurred long before a final proof of the book arrived in the mail and the author was requested to once again read the story for further changes. "That's what's called the writing process," he told S.T.Wordcn students. In running terms, you might describe it as more of a marathon than a sprint. Fast Finish is the 30th novel in the Sports Scries published by James Lorimer and Company. It will be released in the U.S. in January. The book is available locally at The Book Studio in Bowmanvillc.
