Donations are Welcome at Scugog Rd. Light Display by Michelle Wyton Staff Writer It draws spectators from miles around and causes a surge in local traffic traffic every night for a month. For the last eight years, people from across the region have been taking a drive along Old Scugog Road during the holidays to sec the Christmas lights. And, for the past five years, one family has been collecting donations for The Salvation Army Food Drive. The McCauley family has been collecting the Letter to the Editor Skaters Disappointed Over Cancellation Dear Editor: My friend, Sarah Dykeman 12, and I, Paula Cicogni 12, also, were very disappointed when we were dropped off at. the Garnet B. Rickard Complex, we were in charge of three younger children, on Sunday, December 6th at 2:00 p.m. and it was suddenly cancelled cancelled for a hockey game, with no warning!! Since we were only 12, we had no way of transportation and we. had to walk all the way down highway #2 and all the way home. I was very disappointed to see that the public public skating was cancelled at the last moment. There were other people that went for public skating, but found that there was a hockey game. Very Unhappy, Paula Cicogni EDITOR'S NOTE - It would appear that the public skate was cancelled due to a hockey tournament. tournament. Dates for public skating have been advertised in this paper. But perhaps, not everybody recalls the dates. Maybe a sign could be posted at the arena entrance on dates when public skating is cancelled. S>t. Inbretu's flmftytcrinn Cljurclj 47 Temperance St. N. "People will drop money in the box if they didn't bring anything else to give," she said. "Even the first year, when there was no advertising whatsoever, whatsoever, we collected 2,000 pounds of food." The McCauleys empty the bin nightly to make sure the donations aren't damaged by the cold. Contents are stored until they can be picked up. "I usually call the Salvation Army to pick it up when my laundry room gets full," laughed Mrs. McCauley. So far this year, the drive has collected 242 pounds of food over two weekends. But, the number number is down slightly from past years. In the past, the average collection has been about 500 pounds per weekend. "The people around here have been extremely generous each year," said Mrs. McCauley. Although rumour has it that the lights arc part of a friendly decoration competition competition between residents, Mrs. McCauley said it was more spontaneous than that. "It just started out with people putting out holiday displays and it snowballed from there," she recalled. "People started making special trips out here and before we knew it there were busses full of people coming out. I figured with the amount of traffic coming coming through the area, it was a great opportunity to take a collection." "So many people get so much joy out of the lights, so why not share that?" she added. The lights are out from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1 and every night a steady stream of cars slowly makes its way up the road. "Traffic is really crazy, especially on weekends. People are coming around until 11 and 12 at night," said Mrs. McCauley. "At times you can't get in or out of the court." The box itself was donated by Kemp's Orchard and the red paint was donated by Canadian Tire. Donations will be taken until New Year's Eve. The box is located on Andelwood Court, at the south end of the light display. display.
