In-School Mentoring is a new program launched this past September by Big Brothers of Clarington. The program matches an adult volunteer (the Mentor) with a child from grades two to six (the Mcntcc) in a school environment environment for a period of one hour a week. "The idea behind the program is that while the friendship with the Mentor is growing, the Mcntcc's confidence and self- esteem will improve, therefore allowing the child to do better in school," In-School Mentoring Volunteer. The report concluded that there is an urgent need for community community support for children children so that they do not drop out of school. Recent changes to Ontario's high school curriculum curriculum have made it possible possible for a student's volunteer volunteer work to count towards obtaining certain credits. It is hoped that in the future high school students can be matched with Mentees as part of their volunteer work. Unfortunately, since school hours and work hours coincide, many people people who would like to become Mentors cannot do so. It is hoped that employers employers will allow flex time in rescheduling appointments or work hours so that an employee may become a Mentor. In return for allowing employees to volunteer, the benefits the employer will reap arc numerous and productive. Studies have shown that employees who volunteer their time have increased morale, improved communication skills, ' better co-worker relations and improved productivity. Information packages about the In-School Mentoring Program were sent out to all public schools in Clarington at the beginning of the school year. Literature was also placed in the schools so if parents wish to volunteer their child to be a Mentee, information about the mentoring program will be readily available. Since Mentors and Mentees arc matched together based on shared interests, the Mentor is provided not only with the opportunity to teach the Mentee, but to learn from the Mcntce as well.
