This study was launched in response to the pressures of urbanization on agriculture and to shed light on an industry that is often overlooked in terms of its contribution to tbc economy of the GTA. Tbc promixily of the rural area to a large urban market combined with the need for a sustainable and viable economic base in rural areas presents rare opportunities for the agricultural agricultural industry. This study will address this unique challenge. It and nature of agriculture in the GTA and assess the direct, indirect and induced economic impacts of agriculture in the four Regions. Reports on the findings of the Study will be prepared prepared for each of the lour Regions individually as well as a report for the four Regions combined. The project is scheduled for completion by the summer of 1999. Up to $30 million million of the Ontario Whole Farm Relief Program will help farmers through the current crisis until a national whole farm income disaster program is up and running and the balance will become available available at that time. "Farmers told us they need immediate help - and we're committed to ensuring ensuring that they get it now, while we're waiting for a national program to start," Villeneuve said.
