The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanviilc, January 7, 1998 Page 5 Déjà Vu? For Cyclist From page 4 to make me think twice about starting off into this weather). Friday morning it is cool but sunny and although there is a light powdery, dry snow covering covering on the ground I now know it will be gone by 10 a.m. As I pedalled along I saw a small herd of 12 mule deer grazing beside the highway. They arc only slightly annoyed at my intrusion into their space and move a little further into the desert of cacti and tumble weeds. That afternoon I arrived in Marfa, Texas with only one dollar in my pocket, the local ATM machine is broken. I am hungry and I need a place to stay. A sign on the neat, little white building says "Chamber of Commerce - Tourist Information". I stopped and noticed a mountain bike leaning against the wall. Inside is Crawford, the information person, and one other gentleman, the owner of the bike. "No there is no ATM or banking machine in Marfa". "Is there a reasonable place which might accept a Canadian cheque from a stranger and foreigner". Crawford thinks two motels in town might do so. At that the stranger enters the conversation and asks me some questions questions and suggested I may wish to stay - as long as I like - in his studio at the back of his property. I happily accept and then learn that I am to be- the guest of the well known cartoonist, Gary Oliver, whose nom de plume is "Golliver". In his comfortable comfortable studio are hundreds hundreds of cartoons, two working computers, three work stations and shelves of books, magazines and papers which hold cartoons, cartoons, drawn by my host. Saturday I am invited to travel with Gary and some friends to historic and picturesque Fort Davis for an anti-nuclear dump meeting! Is this Déjà Vu all over again? Many of the concerns and questions are common to those of Port Granby and my mind races back to Ontario and the years of struggle to have some action taken. After this meeting we move to the beautiful Limpia hotel where I will meet the mayor of Marfa and Senator Frank Santos, as well as several other political leaders of this area. All seem to be impressed that some one from far away Clarington should visit their area. Sucrose (table sugar) does seem to have an analgesic effect in infants, so it's worth a try. Make a 12% solution by mixing one level teaspoon of sugar with one ounce (30 ml) of water and administer with an oral syringe. Don't use honey as the sweetener.
