St. John's News by Colin Beal Despite atrocious weather, The First Eucharist of 1998, celebrated by Father Hugh on the morning of New Year's Day, was well attended. One would hardly describe it as a large congregation. There will also be additional money as part of the $650 million capital programs programs announced earlier this year. Post-secondary education has received a two-year stable stable funding commitment. The funding for 1998-99 is $2.79 billion up $30 million over 1997. The funding includes student assistance and will grow to $2.84 billion by 1999-2000. Post-secondary Post-secondary tuition remains a considerable considerable challenge. Colleges and universities are required to set aside a portion of any tuition increases they impose toward a student aid program. program. I encourage our MP, Alex Shepherd to work with me to secure an income contingent contingent student loan program: There may need to be income tax reforms to allow students to earn enough money, tax- free, to cover tuition, and living living expenses. I am committed to work with our local councils to avoid any municipal tax increases. This New Year celebration was a "First" at St. John's (according (according to comments made by long-time members of the congregation) and the turnout augurs well for future years. The Epiphany celebration on Sunday morning included an anthem and lots of favourite hymns. The children children of the Church School helped Father Hugh bring the Three Kings to the Crib. At coffee time, Marilyn Clarke received musical greetings in celebration of her birthday. There are still a few vacancies on Father Hugh's guided pilgrimage to the Holy Land, leaving on February 11th.
