Meningitis Surfaces From page 1 meningitis affects only the covering of the brain and the spinal cord, Symptoms for that condition include fever, a headache that won't go away and a stiff neck. To find out which type a patient has, the doctors doctors will either do a spinal tap or take a blood sample. "People who have these symptoms should take them seriously and see their physician," Dr. Panaro advises. Dr. Parano says about 90 per cent of those who get the blood-invasive disease will survive, while 85 per cent of those who get the second type will survive. "In Kitchener-Waterloo, two of the six cases died," the doctor said. As for the fact that meningitis is contagious, Parano explained that bacteria resides at the back of one's throat and is transmitted in saliva. "Saliva must be shared" for the bacterial to travel amongst people, she said. "That's why it is important that we don't share forks, straws, or even water bottles," she said. A cough or sneeze can transmit the bacteria from a carrier (a person who carries the bacteria) to someone who could become infected. As it is, the people who do become infected arc considered to be "rare," she said. Parano says, "last year we only had two cases in Durham Region. We expect five to six cases per year. In Canada, we expect 1.2 cases per 100,000 people." The best advice Parano has to offer concerned parents, is to "try not to share (saliva), but remember, your child is not likely to get sick." Christmas Tree Pick-up Jan. 12 The last of the Christmas turkey has hit the soup pot; the presents have all been tucked away. And now, it's lime to say goodbye to the Christmas tree, Clarington's garbage colicetor, Canadian Waste Services, will be picking up your trees Monday, Jan. 12, says Grant Ashton, an operations technician at the Public Works Department, 1 "Residents need to remove all decorations, wire, tinsel and nails," Ashton said. The removal of these items is required because once the trees leave the curb, they are taken away to be mulched at the regional compost facility, Ashton says once the process is completed, the mulched trees are sold to private companies like landscapers landscapers and golf courses, During 1996 and 1997, a total of 3,000 trees were collected and mulched in Clarington, Bethesda House Canada Trust in Bowmanville managed to raise $687 for Bethesda House through a raffle held in December.
