The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, January' 14, 1998 Paac 5 Letter to the Editor Helicopter Purchase is a Farce Canadian Citizenship Pictured are Jhampa Yangkyi Gyaltsan and Tenzin Gyaltsan. At the annual Lions dinner Murray Patterson announced that Jhampa Yangkyi had just become a Canadian citizen. Jhampa Yangkyi came from Tibet three years ago. She married Tenzin and they are now working together at Newcastle IGA. Tenzin mentioned that the ceremony was very simple, but full of emotion for the people who felt so fortunate to be joining the world's best country. country. On Monday, January 5, Minister of Defence Art Egglclon held a press conference conference announcing that the Government of Canada is going to purchase 15 new search and rescue helicopters to replace its aging fleet. This is a great idea, but it was better in 1993. Jean Chretien's government government selected the same helicopter as Brian Mulroncy's did, but with nothing in it. The Liberals wasted almost 500 million of tax payers' money in cancellation fees and then bought a similar helicopter from the same consortium they paid these cancellation cancellation fees to. The only difference difference is that there arc no defence options in these helicopters. In other words it can only be used for air and sea rescue. The Minister also claims that this purchase will save the Canadian tax payers 30 percent of the costs the Conservatives were prepared to pay. A 30 percent savings which includes the cancellation fees, the only problem is this government is only purchasing 30 percent of the original order placed by the Conservatives. This government will still have to replace the other 35 aging helicopters, which will have to be better equipped than the 15 EH- 101 Cormorant and at what cost to us then. Art Eggleton also refers to the Cormorant as a "...certified, commercial off-the-shelf helicopter", and yet the military will not be receiving these "off-the-shelf' helicopters for two to four years. So what's off the shelf? In conclusion, the Liberal government's petty politics will end up costing us taxpayers millions millions of dollars more than if they had just gone ahead and purchased what was necessary, regardless of what government placed the original order or whose idea it was. SUNDAY, JANUARY 18TH, 1998 "The Beatitudes" Nursery Care and Church School Available A Warm Welcome To All Visitors ES Editor's Letter Donate a Portion Of Childcare Rebate To Your School Dear Editor, I find it strange that since the teachers' walkout, walkout, we've had so much vocalizing against the schools sending home 'political' (ie: from other than the government) information via our children. children. But there is no word against the government sending home political information (that could well be mailed) such as the "Ontario Family Assistance for Teacher's Withdrawal of Services". What gives here? We, the concerned citizens citizens of Durham and the Ontario People's Forum have been trying to get our apolitical campaign 'The First Forty Challenge' through to parents via the school boards and principals. principals. We arc finding it extremely difficult if not simply impossible. The hypocrisy of this is offensive. We arc simply asking parents to put back, to the school of their choice, at least $40 of their $400 rebate that we find is a political bribe, as you don't have to show any proof of using chiklmind- ing services, to get this 'dirty money'. We find the rebate offensive and immoral. To those people who have a problem with information sent home on the backs of our children, wake up to your hypocrisy and play fair. If anyone wants more information about this, •please call me at (905) 985-0814, Sincerely, Patrice Gibson Kirby Chairperson ■ The Concerned Citizens of Durham ê>t. Phm, This is always a good time of the year to discuss discuss our ideal weight. Here's a simple formula formula to see what you should weigh. For men: 100 lbs for the first 5 feet then add 6 lbs for each extra inch of height. For women: 100 lbs for the first 5 feet then add 5 lbs per inch. Kind of depressing isn't it! To get the best absorption from your calcium supplement, don't take it with high fibre foods or.laxatives. Fibre works to move intestinal contents through more quickly to help avoid constipation. Calcium needs slower movement for better absorption. Separate the two. If you're getting your calcium from milk and eat high fibre cereals, count on only half the calcium in the milk being absorbed. Can thyroid supplements cause bone-loss! In post-menopausal women, women, too much thyroid can do just that However, this risk is not significant significant for the vast majority of people taking thyroid hormone. Their doses are much less than those that cause bone loss. People taking thyroid replacements should have their levels checked at least yearly. Thinking of "butting out"! Smoking is the leading cause of preventable preventable death in Canada today. It causes brittle bones and impotent males. It's the single greatest cause of heart disease, it doubles your risk of stroke, causes lung cancer, and second-hand smoke can harm our children. Now's the time to stop. Talk to our pharmacists about ways you can kick the smoking addiction. We'd be glad to help. Pharmacist Orthotist Bowmanville Clinic Pharmacy Ltd. 222 King St. East Bowmanville, Ont.
