Racism: A Student's Perspective Crimestoppers Thus far, the 1997-1998 school year at Bowmanvillc High School has been relatively free of violent acts of racism. However, this does not mean thc problcm has vanished. vanished. Far from it, in fact. With organizations such as The Heritage Front becoming quite established established in this immediate area, and they're recruiting even younger members (12-16 years of age), I can only speculate why there haven't been any problems within our school. What a sad society we live in when a small town youth, such as myself, is frightened for her friends' and peers' safely. Living on the edge of my scat, I'm waiting for something awful to happen. happen. I feel that the intolerance intolerance and ignorance that hangs around a few intolerant intolerant and ignorant people BHS News to be a real threat to the safety and well-being of the other students of B.H.S. In the past, I've been spit at, sworn at, had chunks of ice hurled at me and I've even been pushed into a locker, only for speaking my mind. I speak out against racism and homophobia. So the lack of respect for others that these skinheads skinheads so willingly display makes me wonder what minorities in this area arc feeling. How must they feel when they arrive at . school in September and find a swastika carved into a bathroom stall? When they see the white laces in the combat boots? U.C.A.R.E. (United Cultural, Anti-Racism Equity) at Bowmanvillc High School is currently preparing a poster and slicker sale that bears their message. Also, in the near future Urban Alliance for Race Relations (a Toronto- based volunteer organization organization that docs workshops with students on dealing with racism in their schools), will be visiting our school and speaking with the members of U.C.A.R.E. I urge parents to discuss this matter with their children, children, no matter how, young or old, so that those lines of communication are open. I sincerely hope that students take U.C.A.R.E.'s message to heart and begin to respect themselves and each other. Until we all do. there is no hope for the true equality within humanity.
