The Lord Elgin students students were awarded a $100 gift certificate from Business Depot after being named the "class prize" winner. A $250 cash prize went to St. Francis de Sales Catholic School in Ajax and a student from Bcllwood Public School in Whitby won a $500 Young Savers Account from Royal Bank. Over 100 students from across Durham participated participated by creating poetry songs, videos and art. "Children suffer the most from second-hand smoke," says Dr. Kyle, Medical Officer of Health. Monday, Jan. 26 Assaulted -- Police say a 35-ycar-old woman from London and a 39- year-old man from Kingston were driving along the 401 when the man slapped and punched the woman, and then kicked her windshield. The woman was left at the Fifth Wheel Truck Slop, and the police later located a suspect at a local coffee shop. Saturday, Jan. 24 Smashed -- A window was smashed at M.J. Hobbs School on Taunton Rd. Theft -- An Avondale Crcs., Courtice, resident reported someone entered his garage and took a number number of tools. CAS called -- A 13- ycar-old female reported to police that she had been locked out of her parents' home. The parents were interviewed and the Children's Aid Society was called. The CAS then attended the police station and the daughter was returned home. Theft -- Four 19-ycar- olds (three males and one female) were arrested for stealing six metal signs. Four traffic signs belonged to the Durham Region and two belonged to Canadian Tire. Three of the suspects arc from Bowmanville and the other is from Oshawa. Thursday, Jan. 22 House fire -- A house fire led to the arrest of a 30-ycar-old Nash Rd. resident resident when police spotted a small quantity of hash oil on a coffee table. Inspector Ross Smith says the cellar stairs caught fire after the wood stove ashes had been placed in a cardboard box and the box ignited. While on the scene of the fire, the police spotted the narcotic, seized it, and charged a man with possession of a controlled substance. The fire wiped out the stairs.
