All Canadian Sports Major Atom Toros Win 'A Championship in Peterborough On January 24, Newcastle Atom #2, sponsored sponsored by Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, traveled to Grafton for a tournament. Our first opponent was from Trenton. Newcastle opened the scoring in the first minute on a goal by Craig Kelly. Newcastle eventually took a 3-0 lead on another by Craig and one by Dustin Kozak. The leant was outstanding both offensively and defensively, defensively, and every player impressed. Trenton could score only with 17 seconds left, and Newcastle had its first win of the day, 3-1. The next opponent, a team from Baltimore, had beaten Newcastle in two close games in the regular schedule. Newcastle took an early lead on a goal by Craig Kelly assisted by Scan Price. After Baltimore tied it, a tip-in by Kyle Saari put Newcastle in the lead again. After Baltimore again lied the game, Joel Tate put us ahead for good. Then the Newcastle defense of, Ryan Brunt, Matthew Wong-Fung, Andrew Murphy, and Chris Brown, and our goal- tender, Paul Shkordoff, shut the door and Newcastle was in the A finals! The finals opponent was a tough team from Newmarket. Again, Newcastle kept the game close with hustle and determination. Newmarket led 1-0 after one period when Craig Kelly and Adam Norton combined to tic the game in the second. The play was end-to-end, until midway midway through the third period period Newmarket scored two quick goals, eventually winning 5-2. Paul made some great saves. Joel rounded out the Newcastle scoring. Members of the Newcastle Northcutt Elliott leant includes: Paul Shkordoff (goal), Ryan Brunt, Chris Brown, Geoffrey Frenetic, Craig Kelly, Dustin Kozak, Andrew Murphy, Adam Norton, Scan Price, Kyle Saari, Joel Tate and Matthew Wong-Fung. Coaches Nick Shkordoff and Larry Brunt, with Manager Lester Wong- Fung, deserve credit and thanks for bringing the players along so far. Lange's Foto Bounced From Playoffs The Lange Foto Source Toros began their first round play-off drive against the Pickering Panthers, and after a hard fought battle, came out a goal shy after sudden death overtime. The Toros were first to score at 13:25 of the second second period when Andy Chamberlain scored on a pass from Jeremy McKee. The Panthers tied the game 24 seconds later, and a scoreless third period period set up a ten minute overtime. The Panthers scored with 1:39 remaining remaining to put the Toros down one game in the best-of- threc series. The Toros found the confines of their home arena more to their liking and played a nluch stronger second game. With their backs against the wall in this do or die situation that could end their season in the early part of winter, the Toros defeated Pickering 4-1 to even the series. Andy Chamberlain and Jason Emond, assisted by Michael Daly, put the Toros up 2-0 in the first period. A goal from Michael Bertoni assisted by Pat Lenehan ended the second with the Toros looking strong starting the third with a commanding lead. The Panthers answered back at 7:39 of the third before Michael Daly scored on an empty Panthers net. The third and final game of the series was played in Oshawa and the Panthers came out hungry for a win to eliminate the Toros 3-0. After a scoreless scoreless first period, Pickering scored a goal in the second second and a pair in the third to finish the series with a shutout. The Toros couldn't couldn't capitalize on their few chances, and if it wasn't for the splendid play of Ryan Hibbard in net, the score would have been a lot worse. The Toros will now drop down to the York Simcoe play-off round that could find them playing playing Pickering once again to try to even the score. The All Canadian Sports Exchange Major Atom Toros completed a perfect weekend with a 4-2 victory over the Oakville Rangers in the finals of the 40th annual Liftlock Tournament held in Peterborough. The Toros opened the tournament on Thursday evening against the host team from Peterborough. The Toros came out flying, building a 4-0 lead after one period, and coasted to a 9-2 victory. Leading the way offensively was Michael Richardson, who bulged the twine four times. Other scorers included Jeff Johnston, Brandon Kane, Brian Barchard, Brandon Murphy and Adam Cryderman. Ryan Fowler chipped in with five assists. On Friday afternoon, the Toros battled the North Central Ontario 'AAA' team and skated away with a 4-2 victory. Adam Cryderman, Ryan Fowler, Michael Richardson and Jeff Johnston each chipped in with a goal. Chris Trace, Rene Cartier and Chris Gcrritts each added two assists. The Toros completed the round robin portion of the tournament with a 4-2 victory victory over the Mississauga Terriers. The Toros continued continued to get solid defensive play from Rene Cartier, Brad Griffin, Scan Pcdcn, Chris Gcrritts and Kevin Loder. In semi-final action on Sunday morning, the Toros were up against the Ajax Knights. The Toros came out slowly and fell behind 1-0 in the early going. The Toros found their skating legs towards the end of the first period and lied the score on a breakaway goal by Brian Barchard in the final minute of the first period. The Toros maintained maintained control of the game for the remaining two periods periods and skated away with a 5-1 victory. The scoring star for the Toros was Brandon Kane, with the hat-trick. Kevin Bowles had a strong game in goal, making several several key saves in the early going to keep the game close. In the finals, the Toros met the Oakville Rangers. The Toros started slowly and surrendered the first goal. Alec Hamilton scored a timely goal to tie the game in the final minute of the first period. The Toros carried carried the momentum into the second period and built a 2- I lead on a goal hy Michael Richardson. Oakville responded less than a minute later to tie the score. The Toros employed a strong forechccking game in the third period and were rewarded with goals by Michael Richardson and Brandon Kane. Ryan Fowler continued his strong play, setting up both goals. In the final, the Torot were backstopped by Justin Andrews, who made several several key saves in preserving the victory. Square Boy Pizza Toros Finish Regular Season Playoffs are Next ■ The Square Boy Pizza Major Novice 'A' Toros lost 2- 0 to Nobleton on Saturday, December 6. They also lost 4-2 to Tottenham on Sunday, December 7. On Monday, December 15, Clarington won 7-0 over the Pickering Panthers. Jeff Ward and Jason Cadwell had two goals each, while Chris Jukic, Ian Knox and Mike McLaughlin added one apiece. On Saturday, December 20, the Toros defeated Markham 5-1. Chris Marchant and Jeff Ward tallied twice each, with a single goal to Ryan Cross. Back on home ice Sunday, December 21, the Toros met Keswick. After Keswick took a 2-0 lead, the Toros began their comeback in the third period. Chris Jukic and Jason Cadwell scored, but Keswick managed to pull out a 3-2 victory. Iroquois Park Arena was the setting for the next game . on Saturday, January 3, against the Whitby Wildcats. The Toros won 5-3. Jason Cadwell scored twice, once into the open net to lead the offence. Mike McLaughlin, Chris Marchant and Stephen Thomas had the other goals. On Sunday, January 4, the Toros settled for a 2-2 tie in Bradford. Stephen Thomas scored to give the Toros a 1-0 lead. Bradford then went ahead 2-1. Mike McLaughlin set up Ryan Cross for the tieing goal with only 6.9 seconds left in this exciting game. On Wednesday, January 7, the Toros met Ajax at the Oshawa Ice Palace. The Toros won 4-1. Jason Cadwell, Chris Marchant (2), and Jeff Ward scored. Derek Carruthers went the distance in goal. This game completed completed the regular season for Square Boy, who are looking looking forward to upcoming playoff action. Newcastle Novices Secure First Place Millbrook hosted the Newcastle Novice rep team on Sunday, January 11, only to be defeated on home ice by an 8-1 score. On Friday, January 16, Newcastle faced Orono. Once again the opposition was no match in a close 2-1 victory. In the dying seconds of the game, Orono, with their goalie pulled, failed to stop the overpowering overpowering Newcastle team. Cameron Richardson assisted by Aaron Fattori, and Ryan Nicholson assisted by Ricki Palmatecr, gave Newcastle the win. Hats off to goalie Mitchell Bacon and the rest of the team. On Saturday, January 24, Newcastle had a rematch with Orono. Orono's hope of defeating the league leaders were quickly dashed as Kyle Whealy led the scoring, followed followed by a Ryan Nicholson hat-trick with re - -- assists by Leanne Garristo. Consistent goaltending goaltending by Jordan Imray, combined with awesome play by his teammates, led the team to a 4-1 win. Congratulations to Ryan Nicholson who reached the impressive 50 goal milestone. Newcastle travelled to Fenelon Falls on Sunday, January 25. Ryan Nicholson led the scoring early in the spirited match. The game was tied at 1-1 until the dying minutes of the third period when three quick goals by Ryan Nicholson, Kyle Whealy, and Aaron Fattori assured Newcastle of a 4-1 victory. As regular season play winds down, Newcastle, with first place secured, look forward to the challenge of playoff hockey.
