The first period goal for the McPherson team' was scored by Alexandra Slade assisted by Jenna Law. Once again the excellent goaltending by Ashlcigh Evelyn and the continuous strong playing by team members Kristen Robinson, Michelle Jordan, Carly Nemisz, Courtney Hamilton, Amanda Miljanovski, Michelle Hodgson, Melissa Campbell, Candice Jordan, Chantcl Krukkert, Lesley Sinopoli, Colleen Bathe and Rosemary Quinlan helped keep our opponent's scoring to a minimum. Letter to the Editor Super Bowl Party Raises $550 for Food Bank Dear Editor The Super Bowl party that occurred in Newcastle raised $550 cash and was donated to the Clarington East Food Bank. A box of canned food was also donated. I would like to give a special thanks to: Carl Vajda from Molson's, Cord Molulton, Wayne Coull, A1 Grey and Dennis Smigclow for their help at this event. Rebounding from a 3-1 defeat at home that forced the Toros to travel back to Markham for the sudden- death showdown, the Toros came out firing early and often, shocking the hometown Waxers by scoring two quick goals. Markham did manage to come back and tic the game at 2-2, but the Bulls then proceeded to score two unanswered goals within two minutes to retake the lead. Then they built a comfortable 6-2 margin. Ryan Webb, who opened the scoring, picked up two goals, along with Tyler Beers, who netted a pair. Jordan Beaudrie contributed contributed a goal and two assists, with Kurtis Salway adding a single to round out the final score. Matthew Parker and Matthew Smith also picked up assists. The goaltcnding duo of Matthew Cooper and Robbie Goddard continued their brilliant play in net, as Cooper started and remained cool and calm as Markham tried to get back in the game with several flurries. Veteran Robbie Goddard came on to close the door, shutting out the Clarington Tyke Eagle Selects End Busy Schedule of Games The Clarington Tyke Select Eagles had a very busy schedule over Christmas. During the holiday break, the Tykes saw action in three league games, an exhibition tilt in Belleville, and participated in a tournament in Haliburton. The Eagles' first test came against a highly-touted Keswick squad. Keswick scored the game's first goal, and then added another into an empty net for a 2-0 victory. After a strong showing in the Haliburton tourney, the Eagles travelled to Belleville on January 3. Clarington's Brady Bums scored a power play goal converting a setup by Dean Laflamme to tie the game 1-1. With a little more than five minutes remaining in the game, Eagle forward Justin Stadlcr scored the go-ahead goal. The Eagles cruised to a 2- 1 victory. On January 6, the Tyke Eagles Selects faced Ajax in a league match-up. Nicholas Diachenko, Chad McPaul and Dean Laflamme scored in a 3-1 victory for Clarington. On January 10, the Tyke Selects travelled north to Bradford. The Eagles responded to this rivalry with one of their best efforts. Nicholas Diachenko scored twice for a 2- 0 lead. Brett Chapman capitalized on a goalmouth scramble with assists to Justin Bowles and Josh Sullivan. Bradford was unable to penetrate the defense anchored by Dean Laflamme, Kyle Robertson, Stephen Piggott, Chad McPaul, and Chris Rivest. goalie Zack Higgins posted his fifth league shutout. Newcastle Captain George's Edged 3-2 oy Colbome The Captain George's Fish V Chips sponsored Newcastle Atoms travelled to Colbome on January 25, looking to tune up their game prior to the Peterborough tournament. Captain George's scored the only goal of the first when Mark Reid converted converted a Jordan Bowen pass. Colbome roared back to score two of their own early in the second. Late in the second, Camden Matthews tied the score on a great feed from Derrick Knox. A hotly contested third period ensued with Colbome scoring the only goal to earn a deserving 3- 2 victory. The entire Captain George's squad is hoping to "hook" a championship in the upcoming Peterborough hockey tournament. tournament. In game four with the Toros needing a win to clinch the opening playoff round, Markham denied the Toros the chance to celebrate a victory at home, with Kurtis Salway the only Toro able to find the net with an assist to Brad Farrow.
