Hockey Injuries and the Psoas QUESTION: Telma, why are groin injuries so common in hockey players and how can they be avoided? Amongst the most common common hockey injuries is groin and knee injuries. Groin injuries are particularly problematic problematic and can disable an athlete from playing out the season. Prevention of these injuries is important to consider consider for any athlete going into the hockey season. From a clinical perspective, what I see most often is the angle of the hip joint. Many athletes have tight psoas muscles. The psoas muscle is a very deep back muscle. It runs along the lumber spine, then through the front of the hip and inserts onto the inner thigh. Psoas muscle is a hip flexor, flexor, as well as a back extensor. With chronic and long standing tension on the psoas, the athlete is predisposed predisposed to standing in a stooped posture, with the hip at an angle. When this athlete skates, he Is not as able to stride out. The athlete athlete Is then predisposed to injuring the groin and or the inner knee, depending on the angle at which the athlete athlete is skating. Whenever someone comes to mo with a groin and knee injury, the underlying underlying tightness is always In • the psoas muscle. I have seen this time after time. In rehabilitating these athletes, it is essential to first address the psoas tension before the groin and knoo will lioal proporly. This Is one of Iho reasons why groin and knoo Injuries in hockoy recur and %i!L persist. It is not well recognized that the psoas is the underlying underlying contributor to the injury. Muscles work in groups of two. There are hip flexors and extensors. One group allows us to bend at the hip (the psoas) the other allows us to stretch our hip backwards (the hamstrings). When the hip flexors are tight, your whole angle of standing changes. You are inclined forwards and your hips are more on an angle. This will predispose you to having groin and knee problems. problems. When a skater gets on the ice, the additional force exerted by skating outwards is a combination that leads to these injuries. In the treatment of these injuries, the psoas muscle must also be addressed. Prevention of these injuries involves ' stretching the psoas muscle in your warm up. Because the psoas muscle is a very deep muscle, muscle, to stretch it you need to do Mackenzie extension type exercises. This releases releases the front part of the hip joint. As we go into hockey season, if you are an athlete athlete that has had previous groin and knee injuries, I would recommend that you soe your physiotherapist now. Get some muscle balancing balancing done to prevent these Injuries from happening happening to you. Mosport Speedway Ready to Race As ownership of the Mosport road track continues to be clouded with uncertainty, the paved, half-mile oval has announced plans for an exciting season of stock car racing beginning May 9. Mosport International Speedway has seemed to rise above the troubles plaguing the main track, and has secured sponsorships for three of the four classes. "Everyone that shows up gets paid," said race director Brian Bassett in a press release. "If they get to the track with their car, we'll pay them." The Thunder Cars, Street Stocks, and Open Wheel Modified divisions have secured financial commitments, commitments, leaving only the Late Model division without a sponsor. Last year the track paid out close to $89,000 in the Late Model division. That total is expected to rise to approximately $100,000 this year. "I don't think we could put up a better purse than the one you see here," added Bassett. Season-ending payouts range from $150 for first place in the Thunder Cars, to $1,000 for the winner in the Late Model division. The top 21 in each division will receive a monetary payout. "Mosport has spent almost $30,000 on testing mufflers. mufflers. It is only a matter of time before all tracks have to use mufflers, and we're leading the way," said Bassett.
