l News and Events from Orono The Clarington/Couriicc Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, February 7, 1VV8 Page 13 Five New Homes for Newtonville by I. Challice Quote - "Snowflakes arc one of nature's most fragile things, but just look at what they can do, when they stick together." Exciting news this week from Orono! Black Widow Spider found in newly purchased purchased grapes, by Helmut and Peggy Blaschkc, Division St. Rather frightening frightening as the folks saw it on T.V. the very night before. The Blaschkcs were seen on T.V. Thursday. Thank goodness goodness they had the spider in a closed glass jar! The monthly Community Care dinner was held Wednesday, January 28 in Main Hall of Orono United Church, with 43 members in attendance. Delicious dinner was served by ladies of the church and community and following a very excellent speaker from Durham Regional Police, Constable Mark. Very timely topic '"Safety in the home from Burglars". Violation of your home is a devastating event. Some good ideas when away, include leaving outside lights on. Tell your neighbours neighbours if you arc away for any length of time. If you sec strangers in the neighbourhood, neighbourhood, ask what they're doing? Have secure locks on all doors and windows. Startling facts - 50% of burglars come in through unlocked doors! 49% through open windows. Lights on inside and a radio going, can sometimes scare off would-be burglars. A good video was also shown. The police officer was thanked by everyone and all felt it was a good presentation. presentation. Do you, our readers, grow exceedingly tired of so much "junk mail", both in your mail boxes and also inside all your friendly newspapers? I'm sure we all do. And, in addition, so many charities arc persisting in asking for money. It does scent, if you donate once, they are forever on your trail! It would seem to me, our first generosities should go to our local community needs, hospitals, churches, schools, etc. Our local "Clarington Band" is presently struggling struggling to keep afloat. We are fortunate to have a community community band of this calibre. For many years, long before I came to Orono, I can remember an "Orono Band" coming to Millbrook and we were thrilled to hear them. We all know, cutting music out of our public schools is on the "cutting list". Music is a "universal language" and is to be encouraged at all times. By the way Clarington Band plus a guest band from "Caledon Country" arc planning planning a musical bonanza for March 22, in Bowmanvillc High School. Watch for further further announcements!
