Historical Society, along with Mrs. Vancla Preston as secretary. secretary. She is a niece of Orville's. Speedy gel well wishes to Mr. Derek Barnett, a patient in Bowmanvillc Hospital last week. Congratulations to the "Young Ladies' Group" on the splendid success of their third annual "Lasagna Dinner Party", held Saturday evening in Orono Main Hall of the church. One hundred and twenty liol dinners were served, complete with the most eye-catching dessert table. Tables looked festive with candles in colorful bottles. Following dinner a delightful delightful musical program, consisting consisting of 2 choirs, the Sr. and Jr. choirs, piano solos and musical selections by Donna Morrison and daughter, Reverend Russell and a.fun skit by the young folk portraying "Joseph". The closing item was the "highland fling" by Cathy Steward. ; Following the program, a "silent auction" was held. This proved to be fun for young and old alike! A well-known Bowmanvillc man, Fred Tippins, won a large clock. (No excuse for being late!). This was a real fun night for all. Remember folks our "old" town hall lias reached its 100th birthday this year and many excellent excellent festivities are planned. Our sincere sympathy to Mr. Glenn Prout and family in the passing of a loved wife and mother and grandmother, Mrs. Elsie Prout who passed away Wednesday February 4, in Bowmanvillc hospital. United Church News The dedication of the Orono United Church Wheelchair Lift took place Sunday, February 8. Introduction was by Reverend Dr. Mcrvyn Russell and opening remarks by Klaas Schocnmakcr, Chairman. Some of those taking part in the service were Mayor Diane Hamrc, Gordon Worry, Bill Tamblyn, Mrs. Jean Staples (Don) had the honor of cutting the ribbon! ribbon! Orono United Church has had a busy week, with the Lasagna dinner, dedication dedication of chair lift and now Unit #3 had a very interesting interesting monthly meeting held Tuesday, February 3 at the home of Mrs. Margaret Gunter. Eleven members and two visitors at the meeting. Guest speaker was Mr. Edward Millson on a very exciting topic to many of us, "Quebec Committee for Canada". Edward Millson and Clare Gunter both from Orono own properties in Quebec and having known their close neighbours for many years, have heard all about this new committee! Pages of already new members from all across Canada were shown to us. $320 Raised For Ice Storm Relief Fund Clarington East Ministerial has delivered a cheque for $320 raised at the Ecumenical Worship service in Newcastle on January 25, 1998 to the Ice Fuel Fund of the Oshawa Presbytery of The United Church of Canada to assist with the relief effort on Wolfe Island near Kingston following the ice storm late in January. The Ice Fuel Fund was created to pay for a tanker truck load of diesel fuel sent to Wolfe Island in the days following the ice storm at a time when the power and fuel shortage was critical. The $320 was raised at the annual ecumenical worship worship service celebrating "The Week Of Prayer For Christian Unity" which this year was held at Newcastle United Church. Nearly 100 people attended the service which featured participation from most area churches, the Country Four quartet from Newcastle, the organist and choir from Newcastle United Church and a sermon delivered delivered by Reverend Bruce White, Chaplain at Memorial Hospital, Bowmanvillc. It was agreed at a Ministerial meeting prior to the service to send the offering offering to aid with ice storm relief in eastern Ontario or Quebec. The costs related to the service were covered by the Ministerial and Newcastle United Church. Clarington East Ministerial consists of clergy living or working in an area bounded by Bowmanvillc, Orono, Kendal, Ncwtonvillc and Newcastle. Flag Day Celebration at M.J. Hobbs M.J. Hobbs Senior Public School will celebrate "Flag Day" on Monday, February 16th. This is the second year for the celebration. It is the official time the school sets aside once a year to appreciate our country's heritage. The event is at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 1998 on the front lawn of our school. Attending the celebration celebration will be Alex Shepherd (MP), Mayor Diane Hamrc, our student body, members of the community community and the grade six students students from Hamplon Junior Public School, The ceremony will include the singing of our national anthem, student pre- senlnlions, retiring of our current Hag and the presentation presentation of a new Bag. Our speaker told us just recently our Clarington Council and Oshawa Area Councils have all joined this group. The overall idea is "folks against separatism" and who amongst us wants to see our Canada break up? Our speaker was thanked for bringing this interesting topic to our attention. Meals on Wheels Volunteers Needed Clarington Community care is experiencing a growing demand for our Meals on Wheels service. We provide a hot meal, delivered 5 days a week, to seniors and disabled adults throughout the Municipality of Clarington. We arc in great need of volunteers to help us keep up with the demand. All welcomed. welcomed. •h ' V - Wheelchair Lift Dedicated Jean Staples cut the official ribbon at Orono United Church on Sunday, Feb. 8, during the dedication ceremony for the newly-installed wheelchair lift. Mrs. Staples, a life-long member of the church, is joined by Charlie Reid, Wayne Bailey and her son, Paul Staples.
